Leica 12504 Hood

Hi,
First of all I'd just like to thank you guys. Your forum has been very helpful to me (I've been stalking around, this is my first post) & I now have an M6 and 35 'Cron IV on the way (and no money in the bank).

Anyway, my 'Cron is coming with the plastic hood. Since I am a working photojournalist, I feel the need for the metal hood, not plastic.
But, ironicaly, since I'm a working photojournalist, I have no money and spending 120$-180$ on a metal hood (Leica 12504 Hood) is really annoying.

Are there any cheaper options?
I've seen hoods on ebay that screw into the lens thread, but I'm put off by them since I have afeeling that they will cause stress on the lens thread when the hood gets bumped plus it will make the lens even longer (by half a centimeter, but still...).

Anyoen know where I can get a 12504 copy, which clips on rather than screws into the thread & is cheaper?

welcome to the forum GMMorris! 🙂 A bit of googling will find you a hood. Kevin's cameras has eleven 12504s for sale, including an "ugly" one for $50. See item #11 in this gallery:

I use the black paint 35 ASPH and like many in the above thread, don't like the hood that came with it, which if it isn't a 12504 is very close to it. Just a very annoying design that rotates on top of everything else. I bought a standard Leica plastic hood for the lens and it is much better. For once, Leica did a hood properly so wait till it comes and see how you like it before you spend any more money.

I also use the eBay hoods from heavy2stars on a number of Leica lenses and they are excellent. I use a filter on all lenses so the screw-in hoods are not screwed into the lens but into the filter.

Why? This statement makes no sense. If you're concerned about durability, the plastic hood is a better option, always holding its shape after heavy use. What makes you think you need a metal hood?

Your best option will cost nothing extra. The plastic hood that comes with the lens will work just fine. In fact it is a better designed shade when compared to the metal 12504 you are coveting so much. My advice is to leave it alone.

But if you want the cool points necessary for a "working photojournalist" then you have to step up and pay for the metal shade.😎

Agree with BillBlackwell...
The plastic hood is just fine... So at least for the first time, hold it... Maybe it will do the job 😉
And if not... Then, with time you will have the money for the metal one...
