Leica 43mm UV filter

I have a Heliopan UV filter for my 50mm Summilux (43mm dia). But the original hood just cannot hold on to this filter tightly. It bound to fall off very easily. :bang:

So I use no filter for the Summilux now, until I can find a suitable filter, maybe from B+W or the original Leica one. 🙄 🙄 🙄

Again I apologise, and I had not detected any problems although I may never have used the 3rd party filters ever.

Actually Noel I was not aiming my post at you, sorry for the confusion here. It was simply a rhetorical question. I have a regular 43mm B+W MRC UV filter nr. 23185 that fits my Summilux, and two other identical ones that don't (they spins uselessly on the top of the lens). I have a (supposedly incompatible) Hoya 0.75 thread pitch UV filter that screws in just fine. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to this, I've discussed it on this and other forums over the last year or two and everyone seems to have a different working solution for the Summilux 43mm filter. Essentially if you find one that works stick with it!

I felt really bad about not warning you properly, I still do. A lens with a damaged filter ring can be a pain.

I think I need to spend £ for a 43mm Leitz light yellow or yellow.

I really need to use either a regular B+W filter or a Hoya filter because I don't like the Leica lens hood at all. I use a much smaller 3rd party hood that screws into the front of the filter. 🙂

Hi guys,

Sorry to dig up an almost 2 year old post, but since it's a related topic....

I recently acquired a 50mm Summilux and have great difficulty in locating the elusive 43mm filter. And now, it seems that even if I can find it, it may not fit due to the pitch.

Anyone has any ideas where to find the filter? And also, how to tell if it's the correct one (markings?) before commiting on the sale?

I would appreciate any feedback/advice. Thanks!

Cheers,

regular 43 mm filter may fits well but hood cannot attach.

maybe it good to consider regular 43 mm screw-in vented hood from ebay.

its low price, compare to original leica hood, it's a good choice.

managed to get the leica 43mm UV/IR and some color filters from adorama, but not the UVa.

anyone know the product code for the 50lux v2 hood and cap? am looking for those...

What hood do you want to use on the lens and what is the filter you want - UV, yell-grn etc?

I will most probably be getting a XOOIM for the Summilux. With that, I would like to have a UVa to go with it. And if possible, I would like to get a set of yellow, red, orange and green filters for some B/W work.

Cheers,

I have a 50mm summilux v1 and it uses the 43mm filters......I also use the proper hood 12586...I own a Leitz 43mm green filter that I bought on ebay and have used it once in 8 years (I don't use green filters)......it is the easiest to use because the hood can be clipped on and off without removing the filter....that said, I have a 43mm uv and a 43mm medium yellow ,both are B+W...they are not as easy as the Leitz....I have to place the filter inside the hood and squeeze the little silver buttons on the side of the hood (little metal teeth retract) and the filter rests on the lip inside the hood...then I place the hood on my lens and once again, squeeze the silver buttons on the hood (the little metal teeth inside the lens hood retract, there are actually two rows of metal teeth, one row grabs the lens and the other grabs the filter ) and it allows me to place the hood on my lens...then I have to hold the edges of the filter (without trying to get finger prints on my filter) and screw the filter onto the lens...once on it is pretty secure, in the sense that the lens hood is actually being "sandwiched" by the filter and the lens.....wow, this all sounds rather complicated but in reality, it is not a big deal....I only have one 50mm and I usually shoot black and white, I don't hesitate at all if I want to shoot a roll of color mid-roll through a B&W roll, I will switch out the film for a color roll and quickly change filters going through the process above rather easily....that said, if I could find 43mm Leica uv and 43mm medium yellow filters , I would buy them......as far as the quality of the hood is concerned, I have had the thing actually not work before....somehow the springs ( I think they are flat, thin shim springs) inside the hood were not lined up properely and I couldn't get the freaking hood off the lens.....I could not get the metal teeth to retract and take the hood off so I could switch filters.......it only happened to me once and it was on the streets of Calcutta, it was super annoying.....but whatever....I am not impressed with the lens hoods on any of my Leica lenses.....I prefer the Zeiss bayonet mount on my Hasselblad any day.....well, good luck whatever you get..the lens itself is excellent (at least for me it is)........cheers...Michael

I don't have an XOOIM hood although I know what they look like. To see if a XOOIM clips onto the lens with a regular filter (and I think it might) then I would get the hood, go to a store and try a 43mm Hoya filter of any type on the lens, then see if the hood fits. Just make sure its a Hoya that you try. Then you'll know if you can use regular filters or you need the slim versions.

If you need regular, where you buy is up to you, but I would buy B+W MRC filters as they are the best and you have very good glass there. I don't know if it is worth buying abroad from Singapore, but B&H in New York have an excellent selection of B+W filters. If you buy mail order open the filter box at the bottom (not the sealed top) 😉, handle the filter very carefully, and see if it screws properly into the lens rim. If you buy several, try them all. The long discussion above 2 years ago is explained by thread pitch tolerances - some are looser than others.

The only filter that fits is a Leitz 43 mm filter and can be found on the used market. Try KEH, DAG, Sherry Krauter at Golden Touch or there's always ebay. The lens uses a very fine pitch mounting thread of 0.50 mm (actually 0.45 mm pitch according to the Leica handbook). The current standard is a pitch from filter manufacturers like Hoya, B+W etc. of 0.75 mm. The outside diameter and length of the Letz 43 mm is also a little smaller than most filters to allow the clip-on hood to mount forward or reversed. I bought a very nice chrome Leitz filter in E condition from KEH last year for a reasonable price of $25.

Hey you owe me for this tip. Ritz camera has 1 Leitz e43kylight filter fot 50 bucks. The real issue here is that without the Leica/ leitz filter the hood won't fit. I know I have gone thru this process. Look under Leica filters in the Ritz camera online store.

I have the 43mm B+W filter for my 50 Summilux (the black pre-ASPH). The thread pitch is fine, but it is a little too large in diameter to let the hood fit over it. I solved it by using my Dremel tool with a cutoff wheel to cut a groove in the filter ring. Now the hood clips to the filter, instead of the lens.

A better idea is to look for a filter that is a tiny bit smaller, so the hood will fit over it and clip to the lens. Possibly a Heliopan or Hoya? Both their rings are slimmer than the B+W, which is the fattest ring I've seen on a filter. I wanted the B+W MRC coating, though.

If you want the original Leica hood and a quality filter, the obvious solution is to buy a 43mm B+W MRC, take the glass out of it and put it into a Leitz E43 ring.

Thanks guys for the interesting and helpful comments. Really appreciate it.

John, the one at Ritz is not there by the time I saw this message. Someone else must have beat me to it. Oh well... the search continues!

Cheers,

Bennyng, the filter is still at Ritz. Click on Leica filters, not filter, go half way down the page and you will see a Leica E 43 Skylight for 50 bucks. The next filter after that is a 44mm.I don't think you went far enough down the page or you went to filters generally . LOL JE

Ritz isn't the most responsive of online retailers despite several emails. I've had the luck that Adorama has them and bought 2!! Slight cheaper too!

For those looking for the Leitz 43mm UVa #13206, Adorama still have some left!

http://www.adorama.com/US 307226.html

Now, the filter sits on the lens and there is no need to remove it when mounting the hood (12586). Still looking for a XOOIM with cap or a cap for the 12586. Anyone knows the part number for the 12586 cap? Thanks!

Cheers,
