Leica 90mm f/2.0 and R3A question

Just curious if my Leica 90mm f/2.0 APO-Summicron M Lens will work well on my R3A? I would like to use it for some portraits or street candids.

Thanks again!
Bill

Some of the older Leica wide angles & 50's have problems mounting on Bessa series cameras, Bill, but I'm not aware of any problems with your Summicron. See www.cameraquest.com for more information.
doesnt seem like i should have any problems. very nice to know! now i can add the 90 next to the 40 in my bag. Happy days.

Bill, I think that I misunderstood your initial question. I thought by "work well" you were referring to the mechanical compatibility with the rangefinder mount. However, I suspect that you are asking about whether the rangefinder base length on the R3A is sufficient to focus this lens. Is that your question?

I don't have an R3A, so I don't know from personal experience. But from what I've read, I think that the 90 mm lens will exceed the capabilities of this camera at f/2 - at least some of the time. However, since you already have the lens, why not try it once the R3A is delivered. The R3A is certainly capable of focusing a 90 at f/2.8. If you have half click f/stops on the 90/2, I would think that you'd also have a shot at f/2.4 - or whatever that half stop equates to.

Here's food for thought & some frame of reference. The R3A has an effective base length of 37.1 mm. The Leica M6/M7 .58 has an effective base length (EBL) of 40.16. Leica eliminated the 135 frame lines from the .58x magnification model but not the 90 frame lines. So, you might also post this same question on the photo.net Leica forum to see if you can find any users of the M6 .58 have experience with a 90/2 lens. I suspect that most of them are using a 90/2.8. The Leica literature claims that the EBL of the .58x viewfinder is sufficient to focus a 90 mm lens at f/2, but I suspect that it is just about at its limit; the R3A is close to the M6 .58, I think that it will fall short of the minimum base length requirement.

The Leica CL has an effective Baselength of ~19mm. They sold quite a few Tele-Elmarit 90mm F2.8's with it, including mine. With my outdoor glasses, I can focus it repeatably to the same distance. Not as fast and sure as my M3, but with care it pops into focus.

The 37mm baselength and some care should be worth a try. Post the results back here. I am NOT going to use the 85mm F2 Nikkor on the CL though!

True, Brian, but the tele lens they designed for the CL was 90/4. . . And Cosina didn't want to go faster than f/3.5 on their 90 for the R2.

I'm not saying it can't be done - but only with difficulty at f/2 & not with the quick ease that you'd want for the spontaneity Bill's interest in street shooting calls for.

I've had difficulty focusing my CV 90mm f/3.5 consistently, but only wide open. Stopped down a little it's not so bad. With a bit longer EBL of the R3A, I bet it would be much easier. But with the 'cron at f/2, you'd probably be back in the same situation as me; it can be done,... carefully.

Personally, I just think I need more practice with the lens. 🙄

I use the 90/3.5 very often and, after early misses, I don't have any trouble focusing it wide open on the R2. I haven't used it with the R3's longer EBL yet, but I believe that with care, even the 90/2 would be a good match with the R3.
