Hey guys,
I'm thinking about investing in one of Leica M2/3, am curious if Leica still produce parts for these cameras? or the only way to look for parts is by cannibalise another one?

parts don't really break. shutter curtains are the main replaced item I would think and are readily available. This has been discussed many times and the only reason not to buy one is useless rangefinder optics.

The cameras are strong, easily working.
But, BUT I lost the rewind button on early M2,
IT IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE!!
yes I tried Leica, N.J. and Germany.
I will next try independents..

M2's and M3's have useless rangefinder optics?? First I've heard of it.
Try DAG Camera for Leica parts. He often has parts that are not listed on his website.

I found the RF on the M2 with no flare much better than the newer variants. Also the M3 with the higher magnification and larger baselength gives it a focussing edge over modern variants.

I think the rangefinder comment may be about the expense in repairing a damaged M rangefinder. The repair or replacement of a broken rangefinder may cost more than the M2/M3 itself.

It is 'commonly known' that the beamsplitters of the M3 might suffer from separation which is hardly repairable. I believe the M2 is more reliable in that respect.
The conventional wisdom says that separation isn't repairable. Those who actually repair them know otherwise.

eBay seller "tonaya" often has Leica spare parts, although I just checked while looking him or her up because I couldn't remember the name, and they have no listings currently.

Dez, poor wording on my part. I did mean that a useless rangefinder would be an expensive repair and not that the rf is useless in these particular cameras. I did buy a re silvered prism block from Peter at CRR once but it was expensive.

Leica, DAG or Foto Reinhardt - if you really break it you might as well buy another one and sell yours for parts. Sometimes cheaper and often easier
