Leica CL Glamour Photos

I just got my CL set together.
I have the body since a month or more, and I used an adapted Pentax 50mm that I borrowed from my firend on it.
Yesterday the Nokton 40mm (MC) and the multicoated JJC filter finally arrived. I only need the filter because I tend to bump the lens into things.

This sunpak flash is a joy to use, I got it for 50$ new. It also has an automatic mode without the need for additional hot shoe contacts other than the middle point.

My CL had two problems when I got it, the viewfinder (just the protecting glass) was foggy and the film counter was not returning when I removed the back. Luckily, I was able to fix these things easily.

One day when I was shooting, I had to change film in the cold and I was aware that the spool can become brittle in the CL but I did it anyway, so the white part just snapped. I removed that white part and now I am just taping the film to the spool. I want to fix that because loading film in complete darkness is definitely an issue for me. Possibly I can carve something out of wood if nothing else.

Slizrad, welcome to RFF and the CL Club. Good work on your CL combination. I have that lens and that flash too. They are just the best, when attached to the CL.

Lovely Jordan ...beautiful rig

I recently thought of getting a CL with 40 rokkor/cron while my M6 is being repaired
but decided against it hearing no one repairs them / lack of parts (?)

Dag fixed my broken meter and sold me a new camera back.

Thanks Helen. I’ve had this for years and though I don’t use it as often as other cameras, I still can’t ever sell it. The meter doesn’t work anymore, but the camera itself is non near mint condition minus the wear on the dials

Installed a weincell battery & voila.... works like a charm just like 44 yrs ago.

Ok All You CL junkies

How does it ‘feel’ in the hand ?
Snug , comfortable ?
A tad small ?

Anything irk You about the CL ,
Like: part too flimsy , something ??
Or it’s the real deal in compactness, be happy ;)

Thanks !!

I once owned two CL cameras, but I sold both. I did not feel safe with the film advance in the CL. It felt less solid than in the M3 or M6, I thought. I may have been wrong there.

I kept the Summicron-C 40/2, though. Still have it.

Helen, I most often prefer to work in medium format, and travel light. The CL is a light small camera & I happily live with it. For less than 1/2 to 1/3 the cost of an ephemeral Contax T or Fuji Klasse it's a great and 'repairable' camera. Better viewfinder than the LTMs, & a convenient & accurate spotmeter. "Flimsy" ? in reality no. I've used them in frigid mountain weather (Denali in April) & they've never let me down. The CL is a compact tool and it's always brought back the goods for me. Feels better in my hands than a Rollei 35.
As a 2nd camera when working in MF or LF or as a standby when photography is not really the prime objective, the CL is a fine companion. I look forward to using it on the street in Paris sometime..... it's very discreet.
* Besides, I remember agonizing over an M4 in 1975 and not being willing to justify the extra $25 or $50 for the 50 anniversary logo.

My experience with the CL was, for the short time I owned it, really very positive - about the only thing I didn't like was the rangefinder patch was less good than the Ms. It's really well built (but then, Minolta stuff of that period was), the shutter dial was really well positioned and 40mm focal length really suits my style. But ultimately I preferred the Ms I had as just being better in my hands - entirely subjective.

To me it's a great size for having at the ready all the time. Film loading is a bit tricky, trying not to drop the back, but then this isn't the first camera I've had like that. Just something you learn to juggle. Though I do like a larger camera body, the CL is fine now that I've added a grip and wrist strap for security. Can't say enough good things about the 40/90 combo of lenses. It's my first real Leica (bunch of LTM copies before this), and has proved to be a keeper. It convinced me to delve deeper into the M line with the M4-P.
