Can anyone tell me what 'DBP' stands for underneath the 'Leica' name on the top plate of my M2?

deutsche bundespatent. German federal patent.
Pre-ww2 it was DRP i.e. deutsche reichspatent.
Same 3 letters were put on other german cameras too, like on every Rolleiflex TLR nameplate.

it must be "deutsches ..patent"
the gender of patent is neutre, so the "s" gets added to "deutsch"

you are of course right, Sebastian. I was thinking if it should be deutsches or deutsche, but then i thought to keep it simple😀

I don't have the camera with me, but i am almost sure my IIIc says DRP, although is was made after WW2. Could it be that a pre-war patent was still named Reichspatent even after the Reich went bust?

johan, you are right.
even after the war the "DRP" appeared on the top plates - there was no patent administration office after the war, so only the old prewar patents applied (they were annihilated anyway - opening the road for russian and especially japanese manufacturers).
even later the federal patent offices were installed, leading to "DBP".
there should be some more detailed articles on the net, maybe in german, but since i just cannot remember where, for the moment i do not start researching. please forgive my laziness.

i especially like the habit to discuss names. this is less interesting in the western world, but for example in china with its special naming culture, i found it often a starting point for quite delightful discussions.
