I just purchased a Leitz film template on ebay. This provides a form to trim the film leader.

Please let me know if there is any interest in reproducing the template. I am thinking of "knocking it off" in plastic. If there is interest and I can reproduce it I would look to cover the cost of material and postage.

Thanks

HT

I'd be interested.

BTW, might want to post this in the Russian forum, too. Lots of FED & Zorki 1 users there who'd want one.

I'm talking about $5 or less for one. If anyone has ideas let me know. I will offer my newly acquired one as a sample.

Please put me on your list! I want one.

I think Neopan is more fragile physically than Kodak fillum because I've torn up a couple of leaders in my IIIC with it...or more likely, my recent freehand trimming has been too sloppy...

I've have a third party template that I bought at Spiratone in 1965. I find the thing more trouble that it is worth and have always cut the leader freehand with a pair of scissors.

One alternative is to make a template out of cardboard and use it to mark the cutline on the film with a felt tip pen before using the scissors.

A second alternative is to slip a playing card or a business card into the film gate then slide the film between the card and the camera body when loading and initially winding the film (then remove the card). One deck of playing cards will outlast most Leica owners.

The thing about the ABLON is once you've clamped the film in it you can take a pen knife and run it along the template at a right angle like peeling an apple, it takes about 5 seconds to trim the leader. With plastic you'd end up peeling the edge of the template along with the film.

I keep my grandmother's silver-plated children's scissors (no dangerous points, so I can run with them) attached by a cord to the inside of my IIIC's top-loader camera bag...for trimming leaders. But I like to support efforts like HT's!
