This is a better than typical history of Leica for a non photo publication,
not that all the details are correct.

The first 24x36 camera sold to the public was the American made Multi-Exposure Simplex in 1913.

The first commercially successful 35mm still camera was the French made Jules Richard stereo camera of 1921.

The film Leica rangefinders are indeed reliable, but in the context of their classic competition,
the Nikon F and even the Canon rangefinders are far more reliable - needing far less maintenance over the decades of use.
