Leica IIc needs CLA. A good friend recently lost his father. Amongst his things he found a Leica IIc, Serial number 444xxx, in need of a CLA. Any USA Leica technicians out there that work on these old rigs? It is in very rough shape.

These rigs sell for about $300 in working order. Would cost about that to get this camera and lens up to good working order, via Youxin Ye. Would should I tell my friend? I, myself, never fell in love with Leica LTM's.

It's your friend's late father's camera, so there is probably a good amount of sentimental value to it. It may provide a very tangible connection between your friend and his father. One can't put a price on sentimental value, especially for a real connection to a person who has passed. I'd say it's worth the expense.

My mom recently gave me all her old film photo gear, which included her 1969 Pentax Spotmatic and 50mm f/1.4 Super Takumar. The camera's light meter doesn't work, the whole body needs an overhaul and the lens needs work to. I can work on it but I want this camera perfect. It is the first camera that I ever looked through and took my own photo with, while mom helped me. As a camera without that story, it's worth maybe $50 because of the work needed to bring it back to good working order. I could buy 20 Spotmatics from thrift stores for the cost of the overhaul, and there is a very good chance that more than half of them would work just fine. All that said, I'm sending this camera to Eric Hendrickson for him to bring it back to as-close-to-new as he can, because the sentimental value of having my mother's camera working perfectly is worth it to me. It's that connection and history that is worth it.

Most of us would tell your friend to get it repaired. But, they will have to decide for themselves. I think it's worth it. A $300 "working" LTM Leica probably doesn't work properly unless you get it serviced. A good tech can really bring a camera back to life, and most of the work is going to be covered by the basic CLA cost.

I'd say do it. But if they don't care at all about film photography, it's probably not worth it. If they are at all interested, it's absolutely worth it.

Yes a 5cm f2, also in bad shape. Thx

I am going to guess a Summar or Summitar. On one of my IIIfs during CLA, Youxin took apart my Collapsible Summicron and cleaned/lubed it. His wife did the delicate cleaning of the elements after he disassembled.

I am fortunate that I am close enough to drive to his house. He is a very friendly and hospitable host.

Hopefully, the lens/glass is in such shape that it will need just a little attention to be brought back to life. Same with the camera.

Well, I hope he decides to fix it up. As a lover of all things photographic, I would love to see restored, but he will have to decide.

Older German person, ex Leitz. State based. Checked and trusted.
He sold one CLAed with parts to me in 2020 and CLAed another Canadian's LTM Leica in 2021.

He was very reasonable, to say at least.

I won't ever use him again. Although he repaired the shutter on my IIIf, he somehow killed the flash sync, then refused to fix it even after I sent it back to him, telling me I didn't know how to use it. Plus he bad mouthed DAG.

I can vouch for Youxin Ye. He just CLA'd a IIIf and a Summitar for me. They are flawless, clear, and smooth. He CLA'd my IIf a little over a year ago with similar results.
