A friend explained an issue with his IIIc which I have never encountered so I'll put it to the forum.

With 3-4 frames left on the roll the advance knob will sometimes turn as though the rewind lever has been moved to R but then it will catch and continue to advance the film. I tried it today and it worked fine on the first and third roll but did do it on the second roll..

Any ideas???

This camera according to its owner was recently serviced by Youxin Ye..😱 😱

Maybe your friend's Leica IIIc has a non standard take-up spool.A too large an outside diameter, such that the film starts to bind against the body . an other scenario is that the slip clutch between the wind mechanism and the take up spool isn't slipping right. As the film winds up, it has to slip more and more, and maybe when the film binds up , the clutch just free wheels till it grabs again.
it sounds like bad adjustment by the last person who worked on your friend's IIIc.
take it back to him or pay for some one (qualified) else to work on it.

After close inspection the clutch assembly has been greased with white lithium grease. Any camera repairman (except for maybe oilman Ye) should know this assembly is supposed to be dry.

I've replaced the clutch assembly with one of my spares so hopefully Robert won't have anymore problems...
