Hi,

I was wondering if tell what the problem might be with my camera. I hadn't used my IIIf for quite some time and recent shot 2 rolls with it. There seems to be a bright spot in most of the shots. I'll try to include some thumbnails, but we'll see how that goes.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Ed Acosta.

Take a close look at both shutter curtains. You will find one has a light leak. Probably cracking of the curtain or a burn hole.

I think your right. I might have damaged it trying to load a roll. I always have so much trouble with it and I hadn't used it for so long I forgot how to do it correctly. Do you know where I can repair it in Los Angeles, CA?

Thanks.

Ed,

I had this on a IIIa - could sometimes even see a "drag" line where the shutterwas wound on and the pinhole let light in as it went. On a IIIf it is easy to remove the body and make a temprarly repair by dabbing some black pva paint or liquid rubber on the back of the blind (provding it is only a pinhole). You can also find out if the blinds have cracked (more likely on an older body like my IIIa).

This will at least prove if it is a pinhole and allow you to decide on a full CLA or just replacement blinds. If you are having the blinds done, a CLA probably won't be much more.

Sometimes you can slide a piece of white paper in the film plane and use a bright light from the fron to detect a hole or crack. It shows as a reflection.

Otherwise, just expose another roll of film. Expose some frames normally and leave a couple were you only advance the film but do not expose it. That way you can test each of the shutter curtains for light integrity.

You have a pinhole light leak in one of the shutter curtains. I suggest you take it to Whilton Camera on Colorado Blvd. in Pasadena and ask for Edward. He can probably fix this without replacing the curtains, which will save you $$ -- he's a good guy too.

Youxin Ye quoted me around $100.00 to replace curtains and CLA a IIIf which I thought was very reasonable!

It was a cheapy off eBay and has slightly more than a pinhole ... more like a bullet hole! 😀

Thanks for all the advice and help. I'm going to see someone about it very soon.

Thanks David Murphy, Edward seems like stand-up kinda guy. His prices are reasonable. I was really close to selling it. I really love shooting it, but it can be a pain at time to load.
