Leica IIIg

I sent some pictures to coelecanth of my Leica IIIg outfit. Since I am a brand spanking new 72 year old, I am not sure what is going to happen. But, I am following instructions, I hope. I would be interested in what everyone might think I should do with this outfit, like never used?

Umm,
1. determine if the camera works
2. buy some film
3. take photos.

You'll be very pleased with what a working IIIg can do.

Well, the IIIG is comparatively rare compared to the IIIF - not so many made - but the only real improvement is the better viewfinder. People collect these and as it's in 'original' condition if you want the best price you'd best put it up on EBay. I see you've got some other stuff apart from the camera and lens and you'd probably do best by splitting it up rather than trying to find a buyer who wanted the package.

If you want it to go to a good home where it will be used and loved, and are prepared to (potentially) accept a little less then you could do a little research, set a price and list it in the Classifieds section of this forum. Or negotiate privately off-line.

72 ain't bad. I'm nearly 71 and just sold my two IIIf's (one went to a chap in Norway - long way from here) after many years of dabbling in older cameras.
Reason? - I ended up with so many that I couldn't use them all and although they're fascinating objects of design and manufacture and work well as intended, I find the more modern rangefinders are easier (especially with my eyesight), more convenient and also produce great images. So now I just have a couple of Bessa R series. I do have a digital camera but it's not as much fun!
If I were starting afresh I'd probably just go for a single Leica M6!

IN ADDITION. Don't sell the IIIF. I've got both, Lord knows why.

While it may become more valuable in the future, if the OP isn't into cameras or photography... then this camera sitting around could actually get worse in regards to functunality. I say sell it while you can and buy something you enjoy (if not into photography).

Unless you want really want or need to sell this or you are certain you'll never use it or have no one you'd want to pass it onto someday, keep it, use it and enjoy its near perfect form and function.

Like youth is mostly wasted on the young, fine tools are for naught sitting on a shelve or in a glass case. I believe this gear is too nice not to be in use by someone whom will receive pleasure from using it as it was meant to be used, as a daily carry, so let the collectors look elsewhere and one way or another, set it to taking photographs.
