Yes, it's had a few services and one new mainspring. Needs another service/ repair now: the winder is getting a bit stiff. I find it much easier to glance at my wrist than to carry a large, flat electronic device out of my pocket and pull it out if I want to know the time.

Hi,

You are lucky, mine was stolen years ago; my wife's one failed and after trying to get someone to repair it I gave up (no parts they all said) and my replacement Geneve failed a while ago and I thought here we go again and gave up on it. Then I got a nice, neat Sekonda but it didn't survive the washing machine...

So now I'm down to a Longines and am wondering what disaster will hit it now I've mentioned it.

I've no idea, sorry Raid.

It's skinny, quartz and has no numerals. Probably gold plated but a SS back. The Sekonda is/was the opposite, numbers, clockwork and so on. They were a good pair to consider each morning...

In the late ‘80s I bought an Omega Seamaster and Speedmaster at the China Fleet Club in Hong Kong. A few years ago I had them overhauled at the Omega Service Center in Ginza, Tokyo. My goodness, it cost almost as much as I originally paid for them to get them serviced. If it wasn’t for their sentimental value I’d probably sell them for a small fortune.

As for taking a flat electronic device out of the pocket being more trouble than looking at ones wrist; my observation of the general public is that the smart phone never leaves their hand. Most people have the damned things glued to their hand and fixed in front of their face permanently.

My 21 yr old son is the same way. I tried to buy him a nice watch a few yrs ago and he told me watches were a waste of money.
 
I'm surprised at the negativity / antipathy towards nice watches. A well made mechanical watch is an absolute pleasure to wear, to own, to contemplate and it even tells the time too. And a good watch is one of the relatively few long term purchases in an increasingly disposable world. Properly chosen, a watch will appreciate. And even badly chosen, a quality watch will mostly depreciate initially and then plateau in value.

^ Gets it. As I said. I'd sooner go outside without pants than without a mechanical watch (though of the several I own, I do own one Citizen Ecodrive quartz solar...)
 
Alas: My Rolex oyster perpetual purchased new in 1972 for $150.00 in Geneva is in need of service. The leica's need service about every 15-20 years and the Rolex has been neglected. A mechanical watch is a pleasure to use and forget about batteries. The Rolex is a boy's watch, small, black face and not ostentatious. Love the mechanical world.

Seiko makes a line of high end mechanical watches called Grand Seiko that cost as much as a Rolex. They're said to be better than many Swiss watches. I'd buy one if I could afford it, just to be a contrarian. Also, I really like Seiko watches. They're incredibly good and, aside from the Grand Seikos, very affordable.

I'm not a watch snob either. That's why I'm still wearing the $28 watch my father bought me 50 years ago.

No-one notices it, either. Which is the way it should be. It ain't bling. It's just a good, fairly accurate watch.

Budget or low-maintenance watches have their virtues. I have a few.

But, I just sent my Omega Speedmaster Pro off for repair (broken mainspring and due for service anyway).

Service Bill = $750 USD. Ouch! It goes with the territory. Probably take a few months to get it back.

Good grief! New mainspring and general service for my Seamaster, well under 100€.

Some years ago, an acquaintance told me where the local jewellers get their repairs done (about 15-20 miles away in St. Varent). I've gone there ever since for both watch and jewellery repairs.

Hi,

More or less like mine but mine has a white face and is circular. I'd snap it for you but my wife's phone broke and I gave her mine as it was an excuse to get rid of it. I hate mobile phones as they remind me of work and not being able to escape the office at lunchtime. And they weighed a ton then...
