The simple difference between CCD and CMOS is that CCD captures light and transfers it to be processed away from the sensor while CMOS processes the light in the sensor itself.
That's what I thought. Yet Leica claims except for CMOSIS's products, all CMOS sensors have inferior color rendition.

Don't get me wrong I'm not getting it either but still, it's a feat to cram all that functionality and those different modi of working into one body.
It's the only camera in the world with LiveView (which I hate), an EVF that can tilt and an optical RF all as options on a single body.
The experience I love most is the RF and my M2 does that. But the fact that I need to bring my Nikon for any SLR work while the Leica M can do both with a single body and a clip-on EVF is appealing.
It simplifies file editing and storing a great deal, for instance.

I just don't see the point of using R lenses on an M. If you want focus peaking and R lenses and full frame, get an A99. You'll also get image stabilization and a built in GPS without having to spend $900 on a grip.
Heck, between the grip ($900) the EVF ($575) and the R adapter ($310) you are already over halfway to the cost of an A99...

It's essentially Sony A99 in a bigger package for over 2x the price without auto focus. Not counting the cost of the lenses of course...
Yay! Use a zoom lens in stop down mode, with manual focus. Sounds tedious...
Disagree. It is a universal FF lens platform that will be more versatile in terms of lenses that can be used and degree of customization than any current FF camera. Let me go out on a limb here: After Leica proves the concept works, I predict we will see a similar FF mirrorless platform from either or all of Sony, Canon or Nikon in the next 18 months.
It is not tedious. It is revolutionary. It is the beginning of the end of proprietary lens mounts.
Am I far out enough on a limb here?
Ben.

If I understand correctly... the new Leica M-E is a cheaper version of the M9 -without any modifications, except for some cosmetic ones? Thanks your feedback. Peter
Speaking practically, and from experience (having used R lenses in similar manner on digitals that do not have image stabilization) it actually *is* rather tedious. Focus peaking helps, but the reduced image on an EVF will often portray areas of high contrast as in focus, when they are not. To get around this, one has to magnify the image. Try a 10x mag looking through a 100mm lens...you'll get serious camera shake and you'll lose track of the subject, not to mention framing. Add in the complication of a manual diaphragm and it's not a pretty picture.
Other cameras also have flip LCDs which make tripod shooting much more enjoyable.
If I wanted an M, I would shoot it as a traditional M - not with the EVF, and not with the grip, and not with R lenses. It's good that people who want that capability can try it, but iMHO they will ultimately be disappointed. The A99 is a far better platform for adapted R...people in that market segment probably can afford both anyway.

Am I the only one liking the new M and the price reduction of the M-E?
They kept the M price as when the M9 was launched, and they priced the M-E lower than the M9 right?
I really hope people will do the switch to the M and more used M9 will show up, maybe in 2 years I can afford one, and yes, I am one of those that can't afford to lose a Leica, but that doesn't keep me from saving the pennies and wishing one, so please don't start the rude comments like in another post
Glad I have the glass before the M9 was launched though
I think the M will help to increase prices on glass

Nope. I am giddy about the new M. Giddy but poor.

It has the internals of the M9-P, minus the USB port and frame selection lever.

As an M9 owner already I have no interest in the M-E at all.
As for the "M" I could see getting one someday as a replacement for my M9 if it can't be fixed economically, but there's nothing about it that whets my appetite.

Considering the Monochrom and M-E are both based on M9, I think Leica is committing to use it as the platform for the minimalist line for a while. That's probably a good thing for M9's longevity in future servicing.

"Schopf's comments come as Leica has revealed that the M-E will replace the M9 and M9P cameras in the next two weeks."
So there's that.

Right. I wasn't intending to say M9 will remain in production. Do you think Leica is using lots of different components inside of M-E and M9 won't be serviceable long before M-E goes out of production?

No. I like it myself. But the disliking will always get aired out first, specially immediately after an introductory announcement.

The price is a surprise to me. But adding the EVF will surely add at least another $1000 and likely more. Live view and focus peaking. It is impressive.
It's the same EVF that's used by the X2—essentially a rebadged Olympus VF-2, so you can go off-brand and get the same results, assuming Leica doesn't put something in the firmware to cripple that option.

It seems OK without the bulky accessories. I find it strange about the M only name; how are they going to identify the next one ?
With the extra baseplate and the EVF I think I prefer an old Nikon F36 !
In any case, too much money for a digital sensor. Just my personal 2 cents

In response to Gabriel's original post:
My only negative thought is that I wish they had stuck with the number sequence on the M and M-E. M10 and M9e would be much easier to keep track of, IMO.
Everything else about the M is terrific. A thoroughly modernized, state of the art M with all the features and options I would want because I might actually use them—few of the convenience candy options like so many other digital cameras. Same size as my M9 (yeah, the spec says it's fatter, but that's the thumb rest and control dial rather than actual body thickness). I love that it is a platform for both my RF as well as my SLR lenses. I love that they thought it through and put the ability to trigger a flash even with an EVF fitted into it. That sort of thinking throughout is most indicative of the quality that Leica has put into this design.
Of course, I haven't seen yet what the sensor can do, but I do trust Leica in that respect.
The M-E is also almost exactly right: a less expensive M9, a more basic camera than the new M, repositioned in price appropriately. I'm glad they held the price point on the new M and delivered on the M-E as well.
I will be ordering the new M in the coming year. This is pretty much exactly the camera I've been waiting for. Meantime, I'm pretty happy with my M9 anyway.

one more thing:
Gabriel ... Reading your poll questions indicates that to you the biggest issue is that the M is expensive.
Yeah, it's an expensive camera. But it's no more expensive than the M9 and delivers a lot more. That's a good thing.

I am digging the new M, DO WANT! The M-E however seems insulting tbh. They could have just sold the M9 and M9p for $5k and $5.5K. Plus I will have to see that grey color in person cus online it looks freaking ugly!
