Leica M Lenses on modified Canon 5D

I don't really get it. M44 mount, with an M42 adapter, with an M42 to M mount adapter? What? Why?

I guess it leaves open the possibility to use M39 LTM lenses with an adapter... but is the M44 really necessary in that case?
