It's interesting that I did not notice a major tonal difference between the lighter and darker plants. At first I thought the rendering might have to do with the way the MM translates colors. Then it occurred to me that I still had a light yellow filter on the lens. So I guess the lighter plant contains much more yellow.

I know from my days of converting color to BW that some greens, especially in early spring, are actually more yellow. As summer advances, the yellow gives way to truer greens.

I don't use filters much, but in this case it worked out.

I purchased a Monochrome from a RFFer and I got to unbox it and take it to a statewide meeting of a Model T and Model A club here in Victoria last night. Posting a quick image to say how impressed I am with the quality of the b&w images it produces. Haven't had time to really work on my post processing for the MM, but the camera handles like a Leica 🙂 Imagine that...

I have taken a real fancy to the camera and being so used to the M9 and its color work flow, I must say the B&W flow seems quick. I'll have to get my printer some fresh inks to see how the print flow compares to the M9 conversions.

I also understand why MM users say expose to protect the highlights. I got to the parking lot full of model Ts right at twilight and still managed to burn a few highlights.

Glad you enjoyed the site. I haven't touched it in a few years and need to update it, but I am glad you enjoyed the Winogrand article.

Hi Allen. Yes, I did. After waffling about it to an embarrassing extent, I finally decided to let it go. The sensor had just been upgraded, so it seemed a good time.

As much as I love that incomparable MM output, I feel I"m a better photographer with small, nimble cameras like my GR. The sale also coincided with recent reevaluation of my personal photograph goals.

Hope I've done the right thing. As we all know, Leicas get in your blood and are not easy to part with. But, of course, nothing is forever and venturing back in is easy enough, if I decide to.

I thought I might replace the MM with something else, but nothing jumps out at me as compelling. I certainly will miss sharing with all the wonderful photographers in this, my favorite, RFF thread.

John we all have to do whats right for the way we see and work. My MM is going back to Leica this week. I know it has a dead pixel and I hope that they replace the sensor. It is showing some signs of trouble.

I am on the list for a new M 10.

Good luck with your MM. If I were you I would share with them your commitment as a professional customer and urge them to replace your sensor regardless. It's really not fair of them to expect you to face the prospect of a $1K repair and many months without your camera again. I think you have a strong case and I would certainly make it to them.

I have been enjoying some very pocketable film cameras lately rather than shooting my other digital cameras, and reconnecting to film (APX 25, Acros 100 and Neopan 1600 that I had tucked away) is good for me right now.

Thanks, David. I'm somewhat drawn to a film M, but a film GR sounds appealing, too.

BTW, there was a post on FM yesterday in which a guy reports that he dropped his M9 off at Leica NJ in person and was told the wait is now 24 weeks. Wow! Sure hope the MM wait time is better.

Thank you. If there's a backstory, I'm not aware of it. I was just walking by and the strangeness of the scene caught my eye. I was prefocused and took a quick shot. That's all I can say about it.

Thank you John, I hope for that too! I think mine went in ahead of a major crush if only by three or four days. I emailed to try and get an ETA and have yet to hear anything.
I'm trying not to go for anything like an M in film although I have the glass to support that. I am enjoying the XA, Contax T and Rollei 35S....and really love not changing lenses!
