Leica M Monochrom: best pics

^ isn't live view just the easier way to go for close-up/macro ... but yeah there is so much equipment that you can't resist to try:D. Point well taken.

Live View - what kind of fun is that :p

I really got it to use with my M-D, which of course has no Live View (heck, doesn’t even have a rear screen), but I thought I’d try it with the Monochrom as well. Plus the 65mm lens has intrigued me for a while - sort of like a ‘normal lens plus’, if that makes sense. I’m interested to see how it does with portraits, once I finally get out of my kitchen and backyard! It wasn’t strictly to have closeup ability, though that’s a fun feature to have. I guess with the right adapters you could possibly use the 65mm lens directly with Live View? Not sure which ones you’d need.

One thing I did discover is that if you have the camera set to manual exposure (not Aperture Priority), you can shoot as quickly with the Viso as you’d like (no ‘lag’ required for meter reading). It’s probably even quicker than Live View if you shoot this way. The lens is, however, pre-set, but for now I’m using it at about f/4, so I already have it stopped down when I focus. I really love this bridging of the different eras of technology!

The biggest challenge of all is how to fit it in my camera bag, as the entire unit is such an odd shape!

Definitely a learning curve here! Pretty neat though -- the 65mm lens focuses from infinity down to 13" with this particular focusing mount. Shooting in Aperture Priority, you need to give the camera a second to read the light before you take the picture (press the lever until the mirror comes up, wait a split second, then take the picture), so it's a bit slower to work with (plus you get a temporary blackout), but it's really not too bad. Certainly not a whole lot worse than the digital 'Visoflex' experience on the 246. I think it was definitely worth the try!

Vince, I have the visoflex and 65 elmar and the bellows. It is a wonderful set up for C/U work.

It’s really an interesting combo to work with - I got it more for all-round use rather than strictly for closeup work. I’ve been very curious about the possibility of using the ‘real’ Visoflex system on a digital Leica, and it seems to work out just fine.

I’ve been on a bit of an odd gear acquisition run lately, no clue why. A few months ago I got the 85/1.5 Canon, then this Viso system, and this past week a 35/2 Summicron V1 with the goggles (now that is really interesting to use!). Maybe I’m just looking at different ways of ‘seeing’? Dunno. I do know that I need to get out West again soon - just need to make the time to do it.

Excellent. I need to pick me up a Visoflex III. You just inspired me, LOL...
 
The B&W option I've been wanting for a while to go with my M262 and 240, a really clean, nice M246.
