Leica M Photo Agency

I think the reproductions of picures on this site are quite poor. I have Mike Hintlian's book Digging and the pics you get from that book on this site are almost unrecognizable. Also has anyone told the people who put this site together that a small Times New Roman for a screen font is virtually useless? I think I'll send a quick email to the webmaster... ;)

yeah...i've talked to mike and he's a nice guy...i bought an M4P from him a few months back...and he even offered to give me advice when i got my work together for a book...

He does seem to be a nice guy - he's a local here in the Boston area. I think his book is great BTW and thoroughly recommend it to you.

this looks like a poor site. I wouldn't give them my money. The pics even look bad, considering they decided not to post any higher res ones up.

I'm actually corresponding with the Technical Director of the site about the font situation at the moment. He seems like quite a nice bloke. I haven't told him about the pictures yet, just the font. ;)

I may send him the URL of this thread so that he can see its not just me having problems.

Has anyone read the about section?

"Our members are all Leica photographers, which is the most obvious explanation for the superior quality of our printed work (over that of any other 35mm camera). "

Whoa...easy there killer. How about your printed work is great quality because of the great photographers and experienced printers....

Dave

The picture quality is very poor indeed, there are compression artifacts everywhere and the resolution is way too low for me to appreciate the photographs. They placed their copyright tags similarly to Magnum Photos too, that small detail combined with the low resolution makes the site feel like a rip, probably because I focus almost entirely on the photographs. I get the feeling that they are afraid to display the photographs online because someone might steal them...

I find that statement rather offensive! No serious photographers I have met so far actually attribute their work to a particular brand of equipment. Even Magnum does not make such declaration even though quite a few of their photographers are Leica users. On top of that, I find their posted work very difficult to assess due to the poor resolution.

Well, at least they're trying.

While the mainstream media may not give a fig about them using Leica's or not, at least they're standing up for good old manual shooting and trying to downgrade by example the obsession with digital.

The only problem I find is the font... and the margins. Otherwise, I like the design and find it fairly easy to navigate. I've found some images very striking and worth hanging if they were mine, but not so with all of them. Some of the ones from the Zydeco culture are nice. The Guatemalan portraits are a bit repetitive... and I didn't really see the reason. Some of them were very good, in fact, great.

But in any case, Peter, you can add me to the list of people who find their font a wee bit too small. :)

Something tells me their motivation is less about making a philosphical statment regarding the state of photography, than it is a marketing gimmick intended to justify Leica-like pricing of prints, and a somewhat short-sighted one at that, given that their statement might warm the cockles of the small number of Leica gear-enthusiasts while alienating the majority of people who might find it anything from ridiculous to condescending.

And in at least one case, Tina Manly, she has stated numerous times on the LUG that she shoots Leica R in addition to M, not to mention using a Canon dSLR albeit with Leica R lenses. How they propose to prove that all those images were made with a Leica M is a mystery to me.
