I think taking a decent portrait with a wide-angle lens is a difficult task and you did very well here. It reminds a little of the work of Koudelka.

I was thinking the same thing (28mm for portraits???), but agree, you've pulled this off very well. Nice shots, love them.

This is such a perfect photograph. Lighting, timing, framing, shadows...bravo! Love it!
Totally agree with C.C. regarding # 4879. I like everything about it.

Thanks to you both for high praise (Koudelka! I'm shivering!)
I think the portrait lens dogma is a bit overblown. With a 28, framing at talking distance gives you head and shoulders, and intimacy, you are so close you can smell each other's breath. I try not to let the face wander too much from the centre, though.
Cheers!

What a gift this thread has been. It has taken me two weeks to work my way through it. Thank you all.
And what a number of lessons imparted. A clear demonstration that it is the photographer that makes the picture, with a little counter-theme that equipment does contribute a certain style. And what a richness of style in portraiture -- very easy and straightforward, deceptively simple with some lighting, interesting demonstration of "portrait inappropriate" focal lengths.
Thanks again.
