This thread reminds me of an argument I once got into over at photo.net about the difference between portraits and 'happy snaps of people,' as the opposition put it. I've never taken very seriously the notion that portraits only happen in the studio, with controlled backgrounds, long lenses etc etc etc. A bit of light and an expression are about all you really need.
