Leica M pouch?

Melanie - do you think the protection is sufficient to insulate the camera/lens from a fall from shoulder height?

It would depend on what you were dropping it onto and if the pouch was inside of another bag. I carry mine in a Timbuk2 Metro bag (the tiny version of the messenger bag) and dropped the whole shebang onto a concrete floor once (I know -- eek) and it was fine. That was from waist height on me, which is probably low hip height on normal sized people. I would personally not want to drop the camera in pouch only onto a concrete floor. The padding is mostly made up of a single layer of neoprene.

This doesn't apply to the camera, but this thread seemed a reasonable place to post a discovery: I was in an REI store today and came across an item called a Candle Lantern Cocoon, which is a two-ended neoprene pouch mean to protect those little glass candle lanterns used by campers. They fit Leica lenses almost perfectly. You can either cut them in half and have two bags, or, you can make a little top flap out of the top half of the pouch, and make it a closing bag. Just a little random info...

Thanks for the additional info. Based on your experience I picked up the bag today at Photo Village here in NYC. It's even smaller than I anticipated. And also less padded than I had hoped - probably not much more padded than my Domke wrap, although I think the layering of the interior neoprene and exterior vinyl probably adds more shock protection. Like you, I carry my M always in my messenger bag, a Crumpler bag. So it's good to know your M3 survived a fall w/ the case in the bag.

Hi Mark,

I'm glad it worked out for you. I too wish it was more padded but then you get the trade-off between small size and protection. If it were much larger I would not be able to fit the camera into my purse (Metro bag) and then I'd miss a lot of shots. In a Crumpler bag your M should be pretty safe.

I have one of the Zing pouches, it just fits my M6 with Rokkor 40/2 and one of the 3rd party metal hoods. Doubt it would fit many other rigid lenses.
