Soon I will get a M3. I need a M to 39mm adapter for it.
Can anybody recommend an adapter?

I have searched ebay and a company is selling 3 different adapters. One for 35/135mm another for 28/90 and the last is 50/75mm. Another company sells just one adapter they say can be used for all 39mm lenses.

What are the secrets behind these adapters.....and which should I get for my M3?

The adapters you refer to bring up different
framelines.

Go for the original Leitz or Voigtländer ones. They cost more but you get better quality.

You don´t want an adapter wich can be used for all 39mm lenses, because it wont bring up the correct framelines (it woud work with a Bessa, because you select them yourself).
I have a CV adapter and it works perfect with my M6.

Off course.......that's the secret......the framelines.......
So the Leitz or Voigtländer also makes adapters for different framelines?

Actually the adapters are designed for specific focal lengths. The focal length of the lens you want to use will determine which adapter you will need. You can read more at our Bartenders site here;

Pick a lens, and get tha adapter for it.
Hope this helps.

As indicated above, this is correct as far as bringing up the correct framelines goes.

The only difference between the different adapters is a notch on the back that pushes against the frame selector. The rest of the adapters is the same. That means that what ever mix of adapter and lens you make, focussing is still correct. I.e. a 90mm on a 35/135 adapter will focus just fine, just with the wrong framelines on a Leica.

In practical terms, this means that if you get a lens with a focal length that doesn't exactly match any adapter, that you can choose which framelines you want for that lens. E.g. with an 85mm lens, take a 28/90 adapter, etc.
