Leica M240 depreciation curve?

Anyone remembers the M240's depreciation curve after it's release ?
When did it hit $5500 $5000 $4500 $4000 $3500 until the current average of maybe $3200.

I bought mine used in April 2016 for 3600 EUR and I'd get 2800-2900 EUR for it now if I sold it. I expected the used prices to go down slightly more because of the M10 but they didn't.

ok I subscribed to terapeak.com which is an ebay pricing service, it records historical prices up to 3years from today so I got a bit of a depreciation curve.
prices in US dollars

just to put things in perspective:

Leica M9 release September 2009
life cycle approx 4 years

Leica M240
Release date ~April 2013 at $6850
life cycle ~ February 2017 a bit less than 4 years


early 2015 4500 average
mid 2015 4300 average
late 2015 4000 average
early 2016 3800 average
late 2016 3700 average
then it sharply dropped to around 3000

I had purchased mine in late 2015 from Tamarkin (nearly new, boxed and all that with a warranty) for $5500. I sold it two years later for $3300. I bought a second one in 2017 (I know. I know.) for $3k and sold it towards the end of the year for $3k. I would have kept the second one, but I had decided I wanted to move onto the M10 and I was liquidating a lot of equipment to do so as I wanted to buy a new one since I’m going to be keeping it for a long while.

I picked up a nearly flawless used chrome Typ 240 this Tuesday for GBP 2,300 (roughly USD 3,250), so I am unlikely to continue tracking the pricing; but if anyone wants to build upon my “research”, go ahead.

Not sure, the M10 is the first M sized M digital... so it could keep its value for a little longer.

Concerning trade in though, if I were to do it I wouldn't go with a color sensor Leica to be honest. I'd be far more inclined to go to the 242 Monochrom.

Yes, the M240 is now sold at low prices for the quality of this camera. I am also getting interested for the first time in a Monochrom.

I could use a few more ISO steps with my daughter being as lively as she is… But, no purchase without some proper research first, so expect a possible update some time in spring.

Wow. Understand these cameras are not my Arena but these levels of depreciation are astonishing, and quite shocking. To me, a collector at heart, spending $1200 on a Mint + Bell and Howell Foton or $1100 for a Mint + Null Series Leica.......Cameras I’ll own for the rest of my life and ones that will Never depreciate.....seems much more logical.

I don’t know if eBay has it in form of the charts, but check only Sold listings.
240 are way bellow of 3K$ now, but M10 price is also going bellow of 5K$.

Have you tried to use flash? I figured out how to do it with M-E and here is next to none of shadow cast. Looks like regular indoor light.
Also...
For the money to get used m10 after selling of m240 you could get Sony A7S ii with couple of compact Tamron primes. It is high iso camera with af and face, eye recognition, tracking. You could even use af adapter for Leica lenses.

I see M9/M9P with new sensors rebounding in price, the latter around US$3k.
The M240, a phenomenal camera & a technologic leap ahead, may end up as the "digital M5". Unloved because of its corpulence and the heresy of built-in video.

There are now many M 240s on the used market. But there are few M9 (obviously with sensor in correct version). I am sure that the M 240 will depreciate even more soon and the M9 will increase in price.

The depreciation curve of any higher-end digital camera can be shortcut as being $1,000 a year, barring some anomaly. I'd put the M9-at-M240-money in the irrational, anomalous category.

You want shocking depreciation? Check out the list prices of Sony cameras. Sony until very recently sold the A7 new for $749. It was $1800 when it was released 5+ years ago.

Digital cameras depreciate then fail. Think of them as expensive disposables and you’ll be ok.
