Can someone explain how the film speed ring on the back of the camera works?

Isn't it just a reminder? You set it so you remember what's in there. There's no meter.

First, make sure you have your reading glasses on!

Then, push in the center of the dial (think child-safety medicine cap) and rotate to the desired position. It will click-lock into place.

You can just ignore it since there's no meter is does nada. If you want to use it as a reminder, just put your thumb in the middle, press, and turn.

I ignore mine. Mostly shoot 400ISO film anyway.

It is simply a reminder dial - it does nothing otherwise.

In my 35+ years of using non-metered M film cameras I have done nothing but ignore that dial.

I use it to remind me what I have in there, but mine is an older M so it only goes up to 200 ISO. I also use the dial to remind me if I have Colour, B&W, or Slide film in there.

ffFilm reminder dial, still gets the better of me and I forget what kind of film is in there. Mine is the old dial that goes to ASA 200 and if ASA 400 loaded... you get it.

I use Al Kaplans reminder trick: jam a piece of the film box into the accessory shoe!

Hah. When I get board I try to figure out the chart build into the back of my Nicca 5. Distances, flash, film speeds.... I'm not that clever.
