Leica M39 fast 35mm, what's to choose?

Nice, looking forward to it!

The only photos, I have seen from this lens so far indicated some wild swirly bokeh ;-)

There is one of them for sale at the HKLFC forum by the way - if anyone is looking (don't know the seller myself). He shows the lens also with some vintage print material with lens specs.

Johan, you didn't grab that UC Hex, that was in classifieds for a couple of hours, did you?

Nope, not me.

Got no cash to burn, even getting a few rolls of film is out of the question currently...😱 Luckily I have a film stash, but it's mostly B&W and I yearn to try some Portra 400 and get some slide film to have x-processed... Maybe in a week or two.

But man was that a deal! Who got it?!

I have heard good things about the CV Ultron f1.7, and have been looking for one for a while. While not in the category of leprechauns or honest politicians, they do seem to be quite scarce. While I hear grumbling about focus shift on the 1,4 from some people

http://digitaljournalofphotography.blogspot.ca/2012/06/focus-shift-with-voigtlander-35mm-f14.html

I hear no complaints at all about the Ultron except that it is too sharp and perfect, and I suspect I could live with that. Is there a string anywhere that is specifically about the Ultron 35mm lens/

My other candidate to the discussion is the lovely little Canon f2. The only problem I have had with that lens is a tendency to flare in backlit situations.

Cheers,
Dez

Thanks for suggesting the Ultron guys but I've already decided to keep my W-Nikkor 1.8/35mm.
I had the Ultron at one time but it is not a screwmount lens in the sense that the barrel is too wide for a screwmount Leica, I found it too big on my little Leica II...

I have always loved the W Nikkor, and have found the contrast to be quite good. I also shoot with a
35/2 Summicron, but I can't say I like it more than the Nikkor.

Btw - somebody is selling a Voigtlander 35/1.7 in the adds right now ;-)

EDIT: oh, just saw your comment above Johan.

For the people, who can compare the imaging of the Ultron and the UC-Hex - what are the differences? As some might know, I am a sucker for 35/2 lenses and tried so many until I settled with the UC-Hex as my all-time favourite. I never tried the Ultron.

Technically, the Ultron is better - less distortion and half stop faster. If you look at the diagram, it seems to be derived from the 35/2 M-Hexanon, with two surfaces replaced by one aspherical one.

The Ultron has beautiful smooth bokeh if you care for such things.

Roland.

Thanks for the info Roland - it doesn't help my plan of loosening up a bit on the lens purchases …

I will watch out for one of these Ultrons locally.

So busy these days... Even don't have enough time to sleep... God... Can't do the lenses comparison by films at this point. But I do have a R-D1s with me. And this weekend I may pick up a M9 locally. Hope this weekend that I can do the comparison by M9 first.
