Your being Silly and a tad mean spirited...
No one has a Gun to your head forcing You to buy an M5
If it's not for You No Problem, There are lots of M's to choose from
For me, it's just Magic to my Hand & Eye
All M's are Great, just the M5 to me a little better ....

Helen, I take it all back. Your use of capital letters has convinced me that the M5 must be the most beautiful camera ever, and well worth the 500% extra compared to all those inferior Japanese cameras of the same era.

Do people seriously think this camera is ugly? It's absolutely beautiful.
Oh, and it's the best metered Leica in existence, hands down.
And for those looking, I just saw a high serial number M5 on Ebay for under $600. That's a REALLY nice deal.

Well.
I have been snobbing the M5 for all this years, while owning an awful lot of other M's (mostly M6's), as its size/format/etc didn't appeal to me. Then, one morning, a friend rings to tell he's selling his for cheap, as it sat unused for almost 12 years. He's gone 1000% digital. Battery cap was missing, body cap replaced by a Summicron 50mm V.3 (no focus tab) and no strap. He wanted a Fuji X100s that I had. We arranged somehow, and I got the M5. Chrome. VF was foggy, and vertically misaligned. Speeds sound accurate, lightmeter responds when a battery is inserted (I have some spare battery caps from Leicaflexes, that are the same). One hour later I had the VF perfectly clean and the RF patch aligned.
Ouch.
Ergonomics, sturdiness, general feeling are great.
I am in love with this camera.

Funny thing is Cosina copied the design (outward elements) when they made the Zeiss Ikon. Same shape, same rewind knob placement on the underside. But stamped metal construction and generic guts (shared with the Bessa and various bargain basement SLRS for Nikon, Vivitar etc etc)
But no-one complains about the looks of the Ikon!

After seeing Erik's photos, I am tempted to buy one M5. I already have the M3 and M2, and was thinking in buying an M6TTL, but it looks like the M5 is big enough for my hands. I did not know it comes with a meter.
I also found this interesting article:
