Leica M5 & Konica M-Hexanon 28mm/2.8 lens

Kudos & a Quibble

Kudos & a Quibble

Now that I have actually taken the lens out of it's box & plastic bag and affixed it to the camera and made a few exposures I have discovered a thing or 3.

1. The focus ring and aperture ring are jsut right for my index finger. I can extend my finger horizontally, place the upper side of my finger on either ring and operate focus or aperture by moving my finger left or right. this may be ancient news to most of you. It's a first for me. I like it!

2. The aperture ring is visible in the lower right corner of the viewfinder. The f-stop numbers are visible as white dots, too close for my old eyes to read. However, by counting dots +1 you know what f-stop is set. Neat.

3. 1:2.8 to 1:22 in half stop increments. Very nice.

4. This is really cool. With the hood attached, when you set the camera down it sits perfectly level. That means any flat surface at least 3" wide becomes a stable support for the camera and lens. Perfect for sitting the camera on the bar at the pub and making long exposures!

5. The 90mm frameline is the metering area for an M5. I'm sure anyone with a 28mm lens knew that. It's in the operator's manual. I had forgotten.

A quibble:

The felt stuff on the rim of the lens cap is too skimpy. The cap slips off. I think I'll get a generic cap and put the original away.

Filters: Agreed. I've been using Hoya HMC since forever. On the other hand, I'm not opposed to snagging a B+W MRC filter at a good price. If I must buy new it's Hoya.

No pictures yet. I'll get them as soon as possible.

they are helpful in a blizzard also when you have to keep wiping the lens (and camera) dry.

EDIT to fix Senior Moment: WESTERN Kazakhstan and Western Outer Canuckistan are definitely filter territory. 😀

Been there. Needed filters!

Wayne that is just smashing!! 🙂 There is a bloke on PN selling a 46mm B+W MRC UV. Go for it!! This filter is The One. I think I'm going to change all my lenses to it. IMO if you are as fat-fingered as me you need a UV filter and a hood on every lens.

Sorry to not elaborate further on the Hoya vs. B+W comment until now; I was away. Much as I like the brass construction of the B+Ws (and Heliopans), I really don't see what you're getting over the Hoya HMCs. Optically, certainly, the Hoyas are as good. Dare I say a certain price premium exists for the German products for the simple reason they're German? I think single coated B+Ws cost more than multicoated Hoyas; multicoated B+Ws are much more.

Yes, one doesn't "need" a filter on a lens, but I really doubt anyone will see a degradation of image quality when a good quality multicoated filter is placed on the lens. It just makes a lot of sense to keep a filter on there if your habit is to walk around with the lens cap off -- you never know what can happen.

Thank you!

Got a link to that filter? I'm striking out trying to find it.

Wayne: The more I look at that M5, the more gorgeous it seems, especially in black. What is your impression of the black paint finish? I love brassing, but that finish looks SO pristine it's hard not to want it to stay that way! I know some folks prefer chrome, but I think the M5 just begs for black.

Rats! I was looking in the Classifieds, not Leica for sale. Missed it by a couple hours.

$675 + Local sales tax with 30 day return period. Not the best price I saw, but I waited too long for that one. Not the worst price I found either.

Finish: Most of my lenses are chrome. So, a chrome body would have been nice. Alas, I must subject the public to chrome lenses on a black body. The good news is that 3 of my chrome lenses have black hoods so from the front the chrome soesn't show too badly. The worst offenders are the very long 90mm elmarit (even thought the hood is black) and the wee 75mm C/V lens which is ALL silver.

But you know what? Grinning. Here comes the Bill Murray quote: "It just doesn't matter!" I love them all.

M5 body #2 arrived while I was typing this. It's all black. I love it too!

Cheers!

M5 in chrome

I always had an M5 in black but more than a few years ago now I found a chrome version in a Singapore used camera shop and had to have it. Sold it to a Japanese dealer because it had developed a rangefinder fungus problem with the idea I would get another at sometime... and found another. M5s look maybe the most 'natural' in black chrome so I don't know why but I really like the M5 in chrome. The best Leica for for many reasons and my most used Leica, it just feels right with its vertical hanging across the chest, takes the weight off and doesn't fall forward when I bend over. The meter is great! , finder is wonderful! , and with shutter speeds in the finder and that quick speed dial adjustment it works fast! The M5 still lives!

just to get back to the filters for a minute: I have found the Hoya multicoated filters to have a VERY delicate coating. Just normal light cleaning with lens tissue or a microfiber cloth left permanent cleaning marks and streaks. I know how to clean filters and lenses properly yet my two Hoya m/c filters were ruined by one ONE cleaning. I have many other brands of filters and have never seen this before. I prefer Tiffen when I'm not up to the premium price of B+W. Anyone else have have this problem w/ Hoya?

I always buy my Leica lenses in the same colour so that Mrs Andy doesn't know I bought another one.

Oh, nuts, she's standing behind me isn't she. Ouch, aahhh, owwww...
