I came of age photographically when the debate was raging about that newfangled behind the lens metering. There was a great deal of distrust about its accuracy and reliability, coupled with a lot of macho chest-thumping to the effect that "real photographers" didn't rely on anything but experience and sunny-16. I think my young and impressionable mind was permanently imprinted with that message, and I still prefer a hand meter even with my M6 and M6TTL. If their meters die, no biggie.
As an aside, I did buy a Schact meter prism for my Exakta at the time. Used it a bit, but was so ashamed...

I do hedge serviceability by choosing cameras without meters or batteries to worry about most of the time

If the circuit board in my M6 packs it in, I'll just rely on a handheld meter -- which I do 50% of the time anyway 😎
