Leica M6 - I did it because I can damnit!

Wow, school is school everywhere, its aways a few key individuals who make it happen in the sea of incompetence. Now for the hard part, what elements make an Avotius picture, I could say that the 3 art history classes I took gave me an eye for elements that make up a artists signiture but that would be a copout. First off, your composition is great, you have a way of framing the "ordinary" in a way which makes it interesting. Along that same line, the subject matter is alway striking. Coming from the Northwest, I have to go out of my way to find decay. Your pictures are always...Lush with decay/lived in/finely aged goodness. You also use the full spectrum of light and dark, I like how there is often patches of complete black in your pictures (at least on my monitor :) ) I'm also struck by what must occur behind the camera, your pictures have an intimacy, I figure you either are invisible, do alot of interaction with your subjects, or people in China don't mind having thier picture taken. But the intimacy makes the viewer really feel like thier walking down the street. There are other technical things like sharpness and stuff but those are minor, its the atmosphere that really shows through. I'm not sure if this is much of a critique, if you were writing a history paper I could give you an honest critique with things that you could improve upon, but in the world of photography I can find little fault with your work.

Well then it looks like the last 3 years I have not done too bad with my photographic work. A little after my first year of college I realized there was a need to try and develop my own style and touch to taking photos, you know, that whole independent photographer look. Since a lot of what I will be doing later comes from that history point of view I would enjoy your critique.

As for people in China, some dont mind having their picture taken, others do, but most dont, people are a lot more laid back here and will usually laugh it off if they see me taking their photo.

By the way, which part of the northwest are you coming out of?

The Northwestiest, Seattle. I currently live in southern washington (Sunnyside) but when asked I say Seattle, I'm only visiting Sunnyside until I get back home. I wish people were as laid back here, which is kinda funny because of the reputation that Seattle has for being laid back. Its truely becoming a big city, cold/clean/private. But I still love it! :) As for history, your pictures do convey a lot of history, something China has in *****s compared to the U.S. What is interesting is to see the old and the new together, there is an organic feel to many of your pictures, as if power lines grew like vines into buildings which existed prior to electricity. There is also a "pre-industrial feel," which is kind meanless because China was really industrial before the West, but the patterns of life seem to be suspended in time, as if the same people were living in the same manner for generations. But I ramble, and I'm on a borrowed line so more later :)

I love sichuan, especially the food and girls there :D If you love spicy food and spicy girls, Sichuan is THE place you have to visit once in your life time.

You got that right. My gf is very spicy, yesterday we were in the coffee shop discussing studio lighting and techniques from out of her fashion magazine and I thought she was going to rip my face off. Typical. Its a female oriented society here in sichuan/chongqing.

Somehow I suspected you would say Seattle. I was born and grew up around there. First Steamboat island then Olympia for many many years, but I spent a lot of time in Seattle, especially around China town and Fremont. Seattle really is not as laid back as people think it is, I always feel so tense driving through it, such a mess at some hours. Much better to simply park your car in China town then walk everywhere.

Wow it censored *****s. You know the card suit which is also a shovel...

yeah, its a weird word to censor, maybe s p a d e s has a different meaning that doesnt come to mind. This happened when I tried to type Yama****a as you can see.

Anway take more photos, this and that. I have shot 2 more rolls of XP2 here, maybe 3, I dont really remember. A rather low number compared to my usual but work, school, all that junk. Scans sooner rather then later I hope.

I'm late to the party here, but let me add to the heap of praise, especially of that alley shot. That is just a stunning photo--you have a great eye.

thank! actually I have two good eyes, but I use the right on one the camera the most and the left one for looking at the girls :D

Anyway, anyone tell me why the left and right arrows for the light meter seem to blink now? Low battery? If so this thing drinks batteries several times faster then my bessa!

ps. I just noticed, the center dot does it to

Today I got three rolls of XP2 back from the lab. The results are truely stunning. I mean I have never got such great results back from my Zeiss Planar in regards to black and white. Also shots taken with the Leitz 50 elmar, which veil flared a lot with backlights, yet still came out really good, and there are probably one or two with the voigtlander 35 pancake2. I need to go through and see if I can remember what was taken with what. A lot with the Leitz lens though, and almost all of my friend and our sculpture work.

I have not figured out if I should post a new topic in regards to these photos or simple add them here or what. They are all taken with the M6 but with 3 different lenses, the results though really are great....

any ideas on how to post them up?

Oh, I guess I should give someone the liberty of a small little look at what I got back today. Here is my friend Ola pondering what to do about this damn sculpture we are working on:

This was taken with the M6, my Zeiss 50 Planar and with Ilford XP2 shot at 200 as a kind of experiment.
