Can an existing m7 be converted to one of the a la carte options? I emailed Leica without a response for over a week. I have a Leica m7 0.85 that I want to convert to the mp chrome style so it appears more like my m 3

Thanks
Nik

Try contacting Dave Elwell at Leica in New Jersey via phone. He has been able to quote and acquire many parts for me in the past. One of which was a black chrome M7 top plate with no logo/engraving.

I could get him to order me a chrome top plate and lever and have dag install it for me

Thanks
Nik

any other experiences with this?
Thanks
nik

I;m thinking of ordering an mp style m7 top plate with the top classic leica engraving and a metal advance lever and asking DAG to do the work,

any reasons why this wouldn't work?

I will also put in a call to Don

Thanks
nik

Well, it appears to me that you want an a la carte on the cheap, under the table.

I believe they'll tell you to order an a la carte. As simple as this. You xan raise about 1800$ by selling yours. Not that bad, really.

What? If you bought the M7 new, you are likely to be paying considerably more by going this route. And how exactly would sending a camera to the factory service center through standard service channels considered "under the table"?

Nope i bought one used for 1700 dollars. I plan to save 3000 dollars by going the under the table route 😉

Nik

Right, but the camera was new at some point and someone had to have paid retail, so it's not like Leica would be losing money on this. I'm just rejecting the notion that there's anything shady or "under the table" about what you're looking to do (and if it works out, I may be interested as well).

Kirkando,
Anyone could get an ala carte on the cheap, then. It would be as easy as buying a used M7 and sending it in for parts on the cheap.

I think that leica offers an ala carte option for a reason.

What do you want?

Yes, they'll do it.

Price? Ask 'em. You may not like the answer. After all, they need to strip and reassemble the camera. Stripping costs money: possibly more than ordering à la carte and a new camera.

Cheers,

R.

I had my standard MP's viewfinder changed to 0.85-4 at Solms. Cost about 900€. I would assume they do cosmetic mods too, why not?

simple market rule is, if you want things priced on the cheap, marginal cost to bring them to next level most likely is very high.

I want a Monochrom in silver chrome: a Monochrom-P to match my chrome M9-P. Apparently Solms would do it. Musing about this on the way to work this morning, I even wondered about getting them to add an E to the MONOCHROM on the accessory shoe.......Hope nobody non-Leica reads this.

Roy,

First of all, we're talking about service that would cost well over $1000. That's hardly "on the cheap". They don't care what you paid for the camera. Leica has always offered upgrade services, even while the models being upgraded to were available new - they converted Is to IIs, IIs to IIIs, they will convert an M9 to an M9-P even though you can still buy an M9-P, they will 6-bit code old lenses even though you can buy new lenses with the coding, etc.

They make money from offering non-warranty service for their products. There's no way would they turn down business simply because you could buy a new product with the same features you were looking to add. If I sent in my M4 and asked to have 28mm framelines added, they wouldn't tell me "just buy an MP", they would happily take my money.
