Leica M7 Problem: Please Help

Aye, but I'm on a budget and was lucky to get this camera for around 1600... no other retail is going to sell me one anywhere near that price (not even 1800).

Im definately sending it back to KEH without a doubt...

RichB, I agree with you about the "techinicens"(sp) not have correct tools and then bad mouthing the designs. I run into that all the time in my buisness and usually will never use that tech again. Yes the electronics can fail or operate erracically that is due to not reading the instructions... and needing a trained tech. As for Sherry she needs tp upgrade her electronic skills and stop bad mouthing the hand that feeds her. I get very tired of her know all attitude and how it turns people off. It's been brought up here before...

"ticking time bomb"... What a great way to put it. There's been dozens and dozens of stories about the M7's wonky electronics, and then when the most respected Leica tech of all states it, M7 owners bad-mouth her. I LOVE it!

The M7 is the pinnacle of Leica M design and the end of the line . . .
Dear Dick,

A matter of opinion. I MUCH prefer the MP. And of course this problem couldn't happen with an MP.

But I completely agree with those who say that the vendor will fix it. They're a good company; they do. Yes, I see why the OP wants to see if others have had the same problem -- it is an intriguing question -- but anything made by man can go wrong. In the words of the old proverb, "To Allah alone belongs perfection."

(Note to Islamophobes: 'Allah' is the Christian God in Maltese. He probably gets it right, if He exists, regardless of your professed religion.)

Check to make sure that you are using the right batteries. I understand that sometimes people put in 4 button batteries instead of the 2 right ones and it eventually messes up the electronics in the camera.

Wow, I've been beating my M7 for about 3 or 4 years at least and this is the first time I've heard of all the stories of how bad they are. Only problem I've ever heard of his that some of them, when new, go throw batteries quickly, and they always get fixed under warranty. Guess I pretty dump mine and go back to my flarey M6.

As far as being made of cheaper pieces parts what a bunch of BS. You think Leica has different assembly lines for the 90% of parts that are shared between the two cameras?

Hey! Don't let reality or even probability stand in the way of solid, honest prejudice!

You dare to question the existence and perfection of Allah?

Jihad on you Hicks!

Dozens and dozens (= 48? :D). Exactly. This is a small percentage of them.

We all have our favorite body for whatever reason, I think even Sherry would admit to being pretty biased toward the M5 as the best Leica M, and so talks it up. Nothing wrong with that. She will also tell you that early M5's are worse than late ones. Does that mean all early M5's are crap? Of course not. M's are very much individuals.

I shoot M7's and an M5, like them both, and have had both worked on over the years, but even two M7's with very close serial numbers are very different in how they sound, and how they feel when winding. Individuals. Some more pleasant to deal with than others...

First off, I'm not a M7 hater. I've owned one and enjoyed it a lot. I just believe that I don't gain anything for my use of an M7 over an M6 that justifies spending approx. $1000 more for the M7.

When Sherry Krauter makes a comment about an M's reliability, I HAVE TO sit up and take notice.

Your comment that even two very close M7s can have very different sounds certainly doesn't prove they are dependable, or that they don't use different parts on the assembly benches.

If your figure of 48 is the number of reported problems here on RFF, what about on other internet forums of which there are several that discuss the Leicas? And how many people that have problems report them? How many of those people that had problems are actually active on any forum?

I meant to confirm that every M is different. They are individuals. Anything hand built will be more likely to be individual than a mass produced robot built thing. When people are involved intimately in the construction of something it is bound to show greater individual variation. M3, M5, M7 should all show this variation.

No clue. I came up with 48 from your 'dozens and dozens'. There was no internet when the M5 or M6 was new, so there was less widely heard complaining. I'm sure M6's had problems during their run also. I've shot with 5 M7's, currently use 3 regularly, and have occasional blips with the electronics- always when the batteries are low- does that make the M7 problematic? Not for me.
