Leica M9P, M9M, or SL?

We are at post 81 and I have to remind myself that I do not need another camera, I do not need another camera, I do not need...maybe my wife Simo needs a new camera, perhaps that CL which seems to be excellent :D

Robert,

Sorry to hear of your suffering. You are not alone. We are ill, but think of this thread as kind of a support group.

BTW I kinda bought the CL for "Maggie," but it is now my camera. Not a bad tactic.

There is an Ad on TV in which some parents gave their young child a birthday gift; a set of new washing machine and dryer! This is like your CL.

Maybe you don't need another camera, Robert, but Simo does! :D

Raid,

My behavior was child like, but it worked.

I first bought the CL for me and used it with MF lenses, then I gave it to my gal, and she bought the 23 TL AF lens.

Some time passed, and she bought an IPhone 10 and stopped using the CL.

Then she gave me the camera.

BTW she was gifted a Leica Sofit by some brand as swag. Nothing like a free Leica.

I want a free M10!

Raid,

I'm alright with purchasing a Leica, but if I could demand one thing from Leica it would be for a SL2M.

A Monochrom version of the SL2 with the APO glass pretty much would be a pretty big deal. I would say likely a huge step in resolution.

You know they say the absence of a Bayer Filter Array increases resolution by about 30%. Some people inflate this to a 50% boost, but to be conservative a 30% increase would be a 61.1 MP sensor equivilent.

This would make the SL2M within the realm of the new S3 as far as resolution is concerned, but a B&W only camera. Works for me. Know that the S3 is only rumored and not yet released.

The thing about making a SL2M is that it just requires the same sensor without the Bayer Filter Array (47 MP) and firmware developement.

Brutal I say. Will my dream come true? Leica are you listening?

If Leica wants to make me mucho happy, name it the "Calzone" version.

Cal, I don't understand why Leica does not generate frame line images via a display. You could turn on and off different frame lines so you would only see the appropriate one, and given that focus distance is known adjust the size of the frame lines so they are not over or undersized.

Joe
Totally agree, because they know the lens from the coding.
Also not why not :
  • then you can choose a close or further frameline equity in the menu (some will understand my garbling - the 1m vs 2m aficionados, the first group probably the wideopen & close shooters )
  • and why not be able to choose a 40mm frameline, just to name a lens I have that gives me trouble now and not on the M8.

Thanks for your feedback, Willie. Am I correctly understanding you saying that the M10 can stand its ground against the SL, so to speak?

In terms of technical image quality(SNR) these cameras are similar. Except for very high camera ISO settings (~above 8,000) the dominant noise source is photon noise.

Photon noise which has nothing to do with camera performance. Photon noise is inherent to converting light energy to photoelectrons (electrical charge). This means it is identical for all cameras (when the sensor exposures are identical).

The dynamic range is essentially identical for both cameras.

I thought about this a lot over the weekend. Pretty much could easily utilize my 50 Lux-L as a 50-75mm zoom.

Because 47 MP is "mucho" how much IQ would I loose by cropping? I would be sweet spotting an already highly corrected lens making it more perfect. I would effectively have a F1.4 zoom.

The menu is so convenient to add a frameline selection as a favorite.

EZ-PZ.

As a user I don't need to buy an APO 75 Cron, but this makes the APO 90 Cron a lens I might want instead.

Call this "Q-Factor" since this is already used on the Leica Q and is part of Leica branding.

See post number 197 in Raid's other thread.

Don't you have enough M lenses, Raid?

Or: does one get a free collapsible Elmar 2.8 as a bonus with every new M10?

Believe me, I am crazy about Leicas. Just not digital Leicas - I've owned M8 twice and read enough about M9. Common sense. :)

I was at first very disappointed with the "new" M8, but then I got used to starting with DNG files and then improving the look of the images, as needed. The M9 has its weaknesses, but it is a very good camera.

I have an Elmar 50/2.8M. I also have other lenses.
I am reading about the Summicron magic in the L mount.
Is it true>
