It'll definitely take some getting used to. My first test shot at lunch accidentally turned to 4. I hit the button and heard the motor whir but didn't hear a "shutter" sound so I kept it held down. I thought it was having trouble focusing but eventually I realized I was firing off multiple shots. Doh.

...Unfortunately it is not true that the Mini prefocuses with the shutter half pressed, like most cameras of this type it only stores the distance. The lens is moved when the shutter button is pressed fully.
Shutter lag is longer than with the µ2. Since the XA does not AF there is no lag.

Hmmm, the manual says "When the shutter release button is depressed lightly ([to] pressure point), the camera stores both the correct focus and the exposure... "

You might have been touching the mode button before the series of shots fired. I vaguely remember that there's a way of getting it but can't find it. Edit, after the infinity setting: 3 seconds down sets it to rapid fire but focus is at infinity. So your lunchtime shots may be spoilt, unless they were landscapes.

Mju II also works same way - when prefocused, distance is determined and stored. When release button is depressed farther until end, motor moves lens so it's focused according to previously determined distance. Cameras focusing this way don't waste power and motor resource because users of P&S may do many retries until actual exposure so this design is logical. Sure, some people would prefer lens prefocused at prefocus stage, though industry works for majority. If one needs minimal lag, either selected P&S's or SLR/RF's are choice (at least in film realm).

True, the exposure is also stored. My point was that the focus is only stored and not executed.
