The original strap is God-awful. Get a nice Tap & Dye strap. http://www.tapanddye.com/products/l...ixed-length-neck-shoulder-strap-black-natural

I find the OEM strap a bit short to be used that way (which is my preference as well). Gordy's Straps will make one in the desired length.I use the OEM strap not wrapped in my hand, but slung diagonally across my shoulder to quickly flip up for a shot. No issues. The bigger eternal M issue is what to use to grip the camera better. I have a Luigi half case with built-in grip but the Thumbs-Up is more elegant and is what I use.

Does the original strap have split-ring attachments? My used MM came with a strap that has split rings that are very small but thick and stiff to spread open enough to put them onto the strap lugs. It does say Leica on the shoulder pad. Does that sound like the original?

Wrong.
Any stiff leather should be treated before using it. Stiff leather is ofter thick (good) and dry (extremely bad).
Mine became very pliable after running in and is very flexible now with a lot of use. It is deteriorating a little after 8 years and probably needs to be replaced. Still like the idea of it.
