Leica MP, Konica Hexar and Mamiya 7II reviews/commentaries

Thanks! Well written & informative. Can I borrow the Mamiya? :D

Nicely done pages, chock full of good information. Great shots, too. I second Steve, I want your Mamiya :)

Thanks for the comments guys. As for the Mamiya, I am not going to use it for the rest of the night, so if you want to borrow it, that's ok. I need it back by tomorrow though....

Of the Mamiya itself? I am pretty sure it was the 75mm summilux. I was finishing a roll of film, if I remember correctly.

By the way, the 1V does not have eye control focus, that's the Eos 3 (and A2E, Elan 7e, 7ne). So you might want to update that line in your MP review.

Thanks Stuart, I enjoyed the MP review. Can we have a picture with the Luigi half case on? Also, what are your thoughts on the different viewfinders available for the MP? I don't remember exactly, but isn't there a choice of .58, .65, .87 or something similar? What are the advantages and drawbacks of each?

Good reviews. I was looking for the beautiful Leica MP for some time but decided against another 24x36 camera, the difference to the XPan (despite it's much slower lenses) was not big enough. For me MF is quality wise still the way to go. The Mamiya has an excellent price/performance ratio.

Nice reviews. Now I want a Hexar again. This morning I bid on an Oly XA. I don't need two fixed 35mm lens cameras! I don't.... :)

Hey Stuart,
I visited your site a couple of days ago when you responded to my thread on film/dev. combos. Really enjoyed your photo samples of different types of B/W film. Also love the incredible tonal range in those Mamiya photos. Who makes that leather strap on your MP?

Thanks guys for the kind comments. I write these commentaries as a sort of catharsis, as few of my friends and family are interested in the technical side of photography, so I just spout off my opinions into the ether. It is nice to see that some people are listening.
Tom -- I will update the stuff about the eye controlled focus. I could have sworn it had it when I tried it in Japan. Canon's website also says it is compatible with it, but it does not list it in the specs. Is it possible you can add it afterwards? http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir/controller?act=CanonAdvantageTopicDtlAct&id=2649 Scroll down to the bottom, the 1v is on the list of compatible cameras...

Michael -- I will work on getting a picture of the MP, M3 and Hexar RF's with Luigi cases on them. I think I am going to do a writeup on them. In the meantime, Luigi himself has a bunch of pictures as well. www.leicatime.com
As for the viewfinders, there are .58, .72 and .85. The difference is essentially dependent on how you shoot and whether you wear glasses. If you wear glasses and shoot wide angles, go for the .58. The .72 is fine for most people with glasses for lenses 35mm and greater. Without glasses, 28mm to 135mm. The most versatile. .85 is better for people without glasses who do not shoot 28mm...only 35mm and higher. In retrospect, I should have gotten a .85, but I was shooting a 28 instead of a 35 at the time. I now find that I shoot 21 (with external finder), 35, and higher. For me, the higher magnifcation finder would have been a better idea. I am not sure how much it costs to switch, but I am sure DAG could do it, albeit for a ton of cash.

jja -- the strap is made by the same Luigi Crescenzi noted above.

Thanks everyone else as well. I need to get to work, but I will try to advise you in the thread if I make any changes to the site or add more reviews.

Thanks for the fine reviews, Stuart! Very well done! Now, can I test drive the MP?

Ne v kakom sluchae! Ya znaiu kak vy russkie vodit' mashini!

Just kidding. As long as you take your blue siren along, I suppose it is ok. You will have to come to Santa Barbara though...

To all: Stuart just said how much he admires Russian style of handling high-tech equipment.

To Stuart: У нас есть свои люди в Santa-Barbaba :)

HAHAHA! My fondest memory of Russian driving was when I was living in Vladivostok. It was an icy day, and this group of New Russians' cars (read Mercedes and Land Cruisers) kept trying to go up this hill, and they would get halfway up, and then slide back down, hitting the car behind them. This happened multiple times! All the while, an officer from the militsia was just standing there, watching and laughing. It was hilarious.

Here is a pic of the cases. I will try to get a color one up eventually...the one on the M3 is forest green color, and the one on the MP is dark brown. Sorry for the slightly blurry photo...it was an 85mm lens at 1/10th.

Stuart,

The 1v really, really doesn't have eye focus, I've owned two. Nor does the 300D, 1D, 1Ds, 1DmkII. That site's a little off. But the Canon-USA site is often riddled with errors.

Nice reviews and I enjoyed them very much.

Cheers,
Tom

Stuart, my sincerest apologies for drooling on your MP review page.

Excellent write-up. Anyone want to guess where my tax refund is going?

Tom -- I trust you. I will update it when I can control my eyes enough to focus on getting some work on my website done!

Lobster -- I did not know lobsters could drool...in any case, the MP is moderately water resistant...at least the surfaces are, so it should be fine. The MP would be a great compliment to the stuff you have listed in your signature, especially if you have some nice LTM lenses for your IIIc.
