Leica MP - Second Hand Price, How much?

Hi Everybody,

It's my very first post here. I recently came across a Leica MP - Black Color ( the latest model from Leica ) in a Camera Shop specialising in Vintage and Leica cameras.

This Leica MP is obviously second hand and its cosmetic condition is quite worn out, I would personally rate its cosmetic condition to be 6 out of 10.

It's not really a problem for me, I'd rather have a camera that works as required than one which looks like new and shiny. And I actually love the worn out look of this Leica MP.

The main reason for this post is according to You, how much do You think that it's worth?!

Hi Aizan,

I forgot to mention that the Best offer that I got from the Camera Shop is 2000 Australian Dollars i.e: around 1750 US Dollars.

Just remind that the Cosmetic condition is worn out, some people might even rate it at 5 out of 10.

But the good news is that the camera internal condition is great according to the Leica Repairman from the shop.

1750 USD is a pretty darn good price, so long as the rangefinder is happy and the meter works...honestly, the camera's just gonna get worn in anyway...so cosmetics never mattered squat to me.

The price sounds OK, I only would be skeptical about the opinion of the Leica Repairmen from the same shop ... If the shop includes a warranty / has some return policy, I would buy that MP, run a couple of films through it and then finally decide.

Does this camera have a meter? I'm asking because there was a Leica MP without a meter made a long time ago, which is rare enough to fetch pretty high prices. The current MP is relatively new (from 2003, I believe), and finding one in that bad a cosmetic shape is rare.

Now, if this is a metered camera... make sure the meter works and that the store offers you a warranty as well get familiar with their return policy. I think the prices quoted above are fine for the recent MP.

Again, just let us know whether the camera has a meter and needs a battery.

This Black Leica MP is indeed the latest model of 2003, it has the meter, I would say that it is like the Leica M6 Classic except the only difference is the rewind crank.

The people working in that shop are very friendly, I have been dealing with them since 3 years now, they always seem to be honest and sincere when I sent my camera and lens for repair. I have also bought a few vintage lenses from them before.

Is it black paint? Because that wears VERY fast if the camera is used at all. In that case, I'd cheerfully believe that it's perfect mechanically; it would be almost impossible to wear it out in less than a decade as a beach photographer anyway (lots of nice gritty sand). Otherwise it would take several decades.

what does this mean specifically? do you mean the paint is worn or is it beat up?

In Leica world, 2003 is not that long ago. Try to get warranty and then run a E6 test to see the accuracy of the shutter. good luck. If just cosmetics, I would say ok.

This means that it has had some use AND the price has been adjusted accordingly. Just the same, try to get at least a 30 warranty. If they are straight as you indicate this should be no problem.

less than a week after I got mine the batteries kept burning out. Fortunately it was still under Leica extended warranty and Leica NJ made the fix. Mine is 2003 vintage as well. The 2003 MP are unique because they retained the M6 film dial. I have had mine almost two years and the more I use it, the more I like it.

thats a GREAT price, assuming no probs with meter, RF/VF etc. get it, or if you dont, let me know, cos i can always use another MP! 🙂

Since I don't have the money right now, the offer I got was to pay 20 % deposit and then the rest for the next three months. They will keep it for me, and as soon as I pay the total, the camera will then be all mine.

I'll go there again tomorrow, then I'll ask if I can try it with a roll of Fuji Provia 100f for a few hours and decide afterwards.
