Leica MR-4 height adjustment

Perhaps I am a contrarian, but I sort of like the Leica-meter MR-4. But I can't get it to sit "level" on my camera. It is tilted toward the speed dial and that leaves an uneven gap.

I tried to adjust it with the two small screws but they do ... well, nothing at all. Even removed fully, nothing happens. The only way I could get the meter to sit fully level was when I removed the foot altogether and just plopped the meter down to rest on the speed dial. 😀

My recollection of my first MR-4 I had was that it was sitting level.

Is this a common issue with these? Is there some way to fix this?

I have three on three different bodies and the adjustment screws work fine. Are you loosening the three larger screws first that secure the foot to the meter then tightening them after adjusting? If the normal procedure fails to correct it I'd just put a couple of small thin pieces of felt, from a hardware store, on the meter. You can get pre cut pieces about 5-6mm in diameter and about 1mm thick with a sticky back on one side. They're used to put on the bottom of objects to keep from scratching furniture surfaces. If you can't find that go to the drug store and get mole skin used to protect blisters on feet. It's in the foot care section.

Maybe I got it all wrong, then ... I tried to adjust the two small screws without doing anything with the three large ones.

So if I understand you correctly ... first loosen the big ones and then adjust the smaller, before tightening the big three?

The clearance is fine, it's only the levelling that needs to be straightened out.

Looking closer at the hot shoe on the camera, it seems that the metal spring thing is bent, and that in turn makes it difficult to adjust the MR-4 correctly.
