Leica News from Chasseur d'images

Interesting that there has been nearly no mention or interest in the fourth lens announced- which is the cheapest one in the list, the M elmar 24 f/3.8 : 1800 euros.

Only complaints about how expensive the fancy glass ones are.

Correct me if I'm wrong but no one seems to have mentioned that this camera is the M8.2

Well, it's "cheap" only relative to its hideously expensive siblings. $2,700 for an lens that has 1/3 of a stop and 1mm of focal length on the Snapshot Skopar 25/4.0 evidently isn't appealing enough to drum up much internet excitement, especially standing next to its super-sexy 21/1.4 sibling. :D

Because, like the recent 35mm F2.8 Biogon it's about as interesting as me in a thong.

Not sure WHY they would even bother with a lens that is surpassed in spec by the Zeiss version at a much lower price. F 3.8? Is that another "Good Luck" number from the Lee administration?

Quite right, and it looks interesting enough to warrant at least a mention. Black dot, vulkanite, S mode visible on the dial, as well as a shutter speed that maxes out at 1/4000. Anyone spot any other changes?

OK, I jumped on this pre-release news and was curious of the size. So I merged 21/1.4 pic with current 50/1 and 50/2 from Leica site.

21/1.4 barrel seems to be a bit thinner than 50/1, with wider hood, I guess it will be E60, too.

People seem to forget that the contributors to this forum represent a tiny fraction of those people who buy Leica. Whilst I am sure Leica take note of some of the things posted here, don't kid yourself that this forum is a true representation of what Leica buyers think.
They may take a look at this forum, but they sponsor and monitor the German/English LUF forum. However people are moaning about the prices over there too!

Because there are some buyers who simply won't mount anything but a Leica lens on their Leica camera.

How about the projector ? A high quality beamer for digital "slide" projection is quite unique, too ... Being able to project, say, 10 MP on a good screen sounds great to me ....

Roland.

Peter,

I actually meant all forums. If everyone who makes comments about Leica on any photography forum stopped buying Leica tomorrow, it would not significantly affect their business.

By all means moan away, just don't get the impression anything said here (or on LUF or any other forum) is going to alter the way Leica do business. You (plural) are not the voice of the majority.

There must be no more than 200 or so regular contributors to Leica forums (who would actually buy Leica products if they were cheaper) across the whole planet.

Leica sold 156,000 items in 2007/8. Granted many will be small cost items, however how many items did we buy?

200 or so (and I think I am being generous with that estimation) people complaining that Leica is out of touch is not representative of Leicas market.

The vast majority appear to happy to pay the asking price.

Nice way to put things into perspective, you should have been car seller Roger. ;)
My main pull back in investing so much money in photography is not really the absolute euros value, but the risk of theft. Imagine a M8.2 bag + 24 Summilux snatched from you and you only have your eyes left to cry.
How have you dealt with that over your long photographic life ?

A risk I take. So far I've lost a 21/4 Nikkor, 35/1.4 Summilux and 21/2.8 Elmarit-M, plus a 65/5.6 Super Angulon, to theft, and a Pentax SV written off in a motorcycle accident. That's in 40 years. What's the value? A few thousand: under $200 a year, probably under $100. Cheaper than insurance...

(If THAT isn't tempting fate, I don't know what is...)

Cheers,

R.

a wee bit serious, aren't we?

i personally have bought four Leica lenses this year, albeit used, so i guess that doesn't count even if they were pretty pricey.

i am under no delusion that Leica will lower the price if we b*tch loud and long enough. i'm not even really upset at the high prices as i understand the costs involved in R&D. what i'm really moaning about, what really pisses me off, is that i'm not making enough money to be one of those happy to pay the asking price :bang:

any sugar daddy's out there?

I like helping people, therefore I'm going to buy all the new lenses and M8.2.1.4.

That way, when internet people see my crappy photos they can make derisive comments and call me a Leicaphile or Leicanista or dentist or lawyer or amateur (which somehow has lost it's original meaning) or "the faithful", and feel better about themselves.

The more I can help others distinguish us versus them, the better everyone feels! Yay internet!

You're welcome, sincerely,
Mike

I'm not actually moaning myself! I'd like to get the 24/1.4 provided it isn't too big, and I'm lucky enough to have two 24/2.8 lenses to fund it (don't ask ;)).

Yeah I suppose so.

I just don't understand why people bitch about Leica prices.

Pay it or don't have the equipment.

I can only afford secondhand or demo so if I see a new Leica product I like, my first thought is how long before any appear on the seconhand market?

I'd like to agree with you, Mike, but I see by your avatar that you play golf, and that makes you an eco-fascist.

Secondly, and I hope I beat the grammar police to the punch, it's "you're" welcome, not "your" welcome, as I'm sure you'd have noticed if you weren't so busy golfing and destroying the planet.

bitching feels better than crying. it's more productive, gets the creative juices flowing, i'll show them Leica guys i don't need their stinking lenses, etcetera and go out and shoot with a passion... besides, it's kind of a bonding thing :p

speaking of bonding, i'm with you on the secondhand. but it does make me cranky when i can't even afford those. (case in point -- the two Nocti's for sale in the classified... i'm praying somebody's got a beater out there.)

One, I only play on organic grass. Two, I offer my respect to the grass before taking a divot. Three, after a shot I pick up said grass and smoke it. Four, I collect all ashes from my smoke and place them on the ground in a circle to show deep respect to mother Gaia and the Circle of Life (TM, Disney). And five, I walk the ten meters to my ball for the next duff. Rinse, wash, repeat.

As for the gramma (sp), Mrs. Patton (my fifth grade teacher) just felt another twitch to grab her ruler.....

P.S. I just saw the photo-stitch of the 21mm and Noctilux. Holy kit-zoom Batman!
