I've converted 2 of my R lenses to use on the D700 and would like to share my thoughts.
So far the 50 Summicron (Rom) is no better than my 50 f2 AI nikkor in either sharpness wide open or bokeh. Big difference in price though as my Nikkor only cost €20! Maybe a slightly more 3d pop to the Summicron, maybe. Same result comparing the 24-70 2.8 at 50mm.
The 35 Elmarit on the other hand looks great compaired to my 35 f2 a/f nikkor and even the 24-70 at 35mm. A lot more 3d pop and very smooth transitions from in to out of focus.
I'm going to use these 2 R lenses solely for the next few weeks to really see what they are like and what they can do on digital.
Has anyone else used or use frequently R lenses on the D700? Can a split prism screen be fitted and still maintain a/f capability with a/f lenses? Any thoughts welcome, regards john
