Leica Sales Down 29 Percent

Well, I am sorry Leica, I do love you but current prices of your M bodies and lenses are way way out of my league... I only own very second hand Ms in a very used condition(this gives a good price and unfortunately no profit for Leica).

What this number really means is that the actual profit per unit is actually up a great deal there have been price increases along the way is from what I can see at least 10-15 percent per year. Each year for the last 2yr's with my eyes closed. So like so many business's the actual unit sales is more likely down about 50% So think have bad it will be in the next 12-24 months as clearly world wide consumer spending in Europe and USA are heading into what will be one of the worst Q3 and Q4's in recent history.

Several months ago I tried to explain that "if" the Euro went up short term it would kill all export sales for European Consumer goods..Leica being one of the worst and first to fell the pain. Well can you hear the bell tolling in the distance? European exports are almost totally luxury brand items...and even the big boy like Bulgari, Cartier and many other are seeing floor traffic come to a total stand still. So again the internal business culture at Leica , even with a new owner is arrogantly in denial. Not so with Zeiss located in Solms also.

No these guys are still selling them selves the same drug...we are the worlds best and no price to high! I wonder how the new conversion of the old factory into "Leica Land" amusement park is coming..?? I can not remeber a group of business management that is so determined to shoot themselves in the foot....Oh I forgot....Porsche, now being swallowed by VW after losing 17% of the company as a result of one the worst hostile takeover disasters in even german history. Remember that Prosche was brought in as business consultants to Leica just as the new owner took over...Gee you think there is a connection? All the best...Laurance

I would be buying plenty of new Leica kit were it not for the ludicrous prices. They have priced a lot of people out of the market and you can bet that if the dollar continues to strengthen, there will be no price drop in the US.

The summarit line, introduced to allow for cheaper slow speed lenses... now $1350 for a slow 50 with hood and $1550 for a 35 2.5! If they were serious they would not have slapped $200 extra on both about 6 months ago. The summarits really did appeal to me for their mellow signature and small size and now the process have bloated like anything else Leica. From popflash, you can buy a ZI with 35 2.8 and hood in those bozed sets for $250 more than a summarit and hood alone.

I remain convinced that if Leica genuinely held to a sensible price on their budget lines they would have sold a LOT relatively. The 28 2.8 Elmarit has also gone up by the same amount. For someone contemplating a M9 (if it turns out to be any good) they are doing an awfully good job of putting me off. The body will be expensive enough and I was hoping not to go down the Zeiss/CV milch adaptor route, but it looks like what I will have to do.

You can't get a 0.58 finder (or 0.85) unless you go a la carte and swallow an additional premium over and above the insane $4500 price of a Mp/7. This merely forces people to buy used 0.58s and 0.85s rather than new ones. Who in their right mind, as a user for whom $s count, would buy a new 0.58 Mp/7 at near 5K rather than a mint used TTL for $1400 or used MP for maybe $2800? I could buy a THREE body mint 0.58, 0.72, 0.85 kit for the same as ONE new a la carte.

I wish I could, but I have not bought a new leica item since 2006. I have wanted to on a few occasions and before I can rejig kit and sell stuff, the prices leap up again. If Leica does not get the M9 right, heaven help them.

Maybe not 'a camera for a lifetime' but more like 'a camera for your lifetime's savings!' 😛

It's all so sad really ... my M8 is a good but somewhat flawed device ... the M9 will likely be the tool we really needed ... but I can't see myself ever affording one!

Or a $10000.00 Noctilux ... or a $6000.00 Summilux!

Just how much do they expect to sell when they double and triple already high prices.

I probably bought my last. My Mandler era optics were $500 to $700 when I got them new.
