Leica SF20 on the M8

Hi all,

I am looking into getting a flash for an overseas trip.
Wondering if anyone has used the SF20 on an M8 before?

If so, are they good/easy to use?
I have no real flash experience, so any help is appreciated.

The flash works great on the M8, but you won't have any TTL functionality. The M8, M9 and newer cameras will require the SF-24D for TTL capability.

I've got the sf20 and tried it on the M9 and I think you would be better of with a old nikon flash like sb24 or 25 off camera using the nikon cable, never tried it yet but much easier to use old nikon flashes on manual. I think it would work others would probably know better.

This is an oldie, taken with M8 and posted on a similar thread some years back. I still use SF-20 with my M9 when I need flash. I find it handles easily and produces great results! I usually use it with Nikon SC-17 and off-camera.

This was X1 with SF-20 in M mode as well and bounced with Nikon SC-17. Labs (never mind that he has some Border-collie) are difficult to light!

Just got a SF20 Leica for my M8 and I find it difficult to use in M mode.A mode is ok but limited.

I'm now saving for the sf24D

The images show on my monitor, they are from links on another site but they are clear. It is late here and I travel at 4:30 am so I will have to visit this when I get home. I will try and get them posted. In any case I find the SF20 to work really well and I find it easy to negotiate for fill flash in M mode. This is the only way I use it and usually off-camera. That said I can dial it to work on-camera close in and still preserve skin tones as well.

I have the 24d for my M8.

I find the auto mode with -1 Exposure gives a far more natural light effect than the TTL Flash. - This is for people shots of about 3m away.

+ Then you don't get the strobe flash effect!

I have the SF20 which I use ocassionally on my M8. It's great, very small and compact but I find the lack of bounce head limiting. I use a mix of auto and manual mode, both work great for what it is. The manual mode only goes down to 1/8 setting as well so it's not very good for fine tuning of flash power.
