so ive saved n saved n saved and now i can finally afford a nice leica. dunno if i wana trust my hard earned student money with ebay(even though it has been good enough to me before), so im looking to leicashop in austria. has anyone any experience with them? i dont mind the extra 100/200 euro if its worth it, as their prices seem quite resonable.
 
I have nothing from Austria, but I can give thumbs up SHphoto sponsoring also this forum. maybe you can check if they have what you want? my Summilux came from them. they were a little quiet to my email enquiries about shipment though. anyway, more reliable than average eBay seller I think.
 
had a look at ffordes but their prices are a bit high for the quality that the stuff is compared to leicashop. plus i presume leicashop would be reliable for quality control judging by the fact that they use the leica name. will have a gawk at shphoto now.
 
also their prices for m6ttl's are nearly the same as their m6classics ! should i buy a ttl since it will be considerably newer ? aargh, help needed !
 
I assume you have looked locally in Dublin? I'd much rather trust a local shop if at all possible. If their prices are way out of line, you might give them a chance. Mention it to them. Tell them you'd like to buy from them, but their prices are rather high. It's worth a shot.

I bought a used Olympus XA locally a month or so ago. It turned out to have a sticky shutter. The local place honored their 30 day warranty and ate the cost of the CLA that it needed. It was convenient, and wound up saving me money. (compared to a lower up-front price, but needing a $100 CLA after the sale)

Also, I wouldn't assume that leicashop is more reliable just because they use the Leica name in their store name. That means nothing, IMO.
 
I've had very good experiences in purchasing from www.collectcamera.com in Amsterdam (proprietor Mr Theo de Wit) ; the descriptions have always been accurate. I'm not sure how competitive the prices are though, as they tend to concentrate on the minty end of the spectrum.

dublin is a ****hole camera wise.every(of which there are only 3 shops) shop salesman reckons film is dead, leica's are a rareity, and prices are astronomical in this country. it the worst place to buy camera gear in the world.

i just assume the leica shop name would have the backing of the leica company, so quality control would be spot on.
 
TTL has the larger shutter speed dial that works "the other way" than earlier models. But if it is your first then that's irrelevant. As for the benefits of one over the other, well I think they are both fine cameras and there are so many variables to say one would be better than the other.
 
advice and a compliment - and in the one day :)yes have seen his stuff on flickr before and was very impressed. thanks guys - im so torn with what to do now the dreaming's over and its down to the nitty gritty. bought a 50/2 summicron yesterday and im fit to piss myself with all this shopping malarky.
 
thanks rpsawin - im the kinda guy that spends 6 months looking and researching, so ive done as much as i can on that part. the decision is always the hardest part :)

So, what conclusions have you come to? Do you want the 'pure' Leica DNA of the M2,3,4 (and the beautiful feel, with that engraved top plate) or are you looking for more modern functionality in terms of built in metering?

Note: Others may disagree with my definition of 'pure'.

i have the money for a m6 at the moment which i may not have in the future, so i reckon i go for a newer cam with 28 frames and a meter. or i cud go m4-p, but if the m6 meter goes in 20yrs ill just use a hand held. will prob get a m4 as a backup body next. whatever i get it will be a hard worked camera from the word go.duno bout your definition of pure myself
