Leica Sibir copy...

Ah, another tarted up Zorki. But I would like one for cold weather usage, since my fingers can't take the winter anymore.

I do like those oversized knobs and all. I bet I could actually use that camera with big mittens on.

I wonder if it works?

Some interesting details:

The auction says "Lens Leitz Elmar 1:3.5 F=50mm Diaphragm scale from 3.5 to 16" while you can see the old german aperture numbes (3.5 - 18) on the aperture and the DOF scale.

Why does the shutter show the speed "50" instead of "60"?

Would they print "Germany" on a camera from WW II which was intended for german troops?

I suspect it's a Fed and not a Zorki. I like the Fed I and would think about picking up a so called 'Siberian' Fed one day if they were cheap enough but not a Leicarised one. All that milling...

I don't think there is any evidence that they ever did exist (as Feds) so the are most likely all fakes anyway...

As soon as I wrote that, I knew it wouldn't be right. The spring in the base should have been my biggest clue to its provenance.

To me, the biggest dead give-away about the camera is all the shiny chrome. Really covers up a lot of the metal working to do the fake Leica engravings.

Hear, Hear!
For a long time, I have hoped that whoever is making these would offer an "a la carte" type of service;
let me ask for the modifications and finish to be added to a well sorted camera!
How about a black, lever wind Zorki 3m?
They could skip all the bogus engraving.
Rob
They should cut the crap and just sell the knobs as a kit to convert your own FSU. I'd make a FED 2 Sibir in a heartbeat.

The only knob that would take any work is the aperture knob on the "elmar". The rest I could pop on in ten minutes or less. Wonder how much those fat knobs cost.

Quit wasting the time tarting up a FSU with phony engravings/platings, just toss the parts in a bag, charge ~$30?, and let me do the work. Man, I want a cold weather FED 2 now. It's 0 degrees right now.

Hi,

I would have loved it as an original FED Siberia version but messing it up like that, well...

Regards, David

PS A great pity those creative guys don't offer a service for people who might like a black FED with white FED engravings etc.

Wow, all the work they did on that (I think Fed 1). I agree with many of you, it would be neat to just get those knobs. What about the baseplate? can I just stick the knobs on my existing baseplate? And the lens -- there's a lot of modification there. And its actually pretty neat. (That lens cap!) I guess you'd have to buy the entire modified lens instead of parts for DIY modification.

True, all the fake Leica engravings are frustrating, but the camera might be worth the asking price (or close) if the modifications are as nice as they look. Of course, that assumes the camera itself is in tip-top condition, lens too.

I really don't think Fed ever made the Siberia and believe it to be another piece of make believe.

It would be nice to be proved wrong.

Hi,

I can't see a huge demand for them, perhaps they made small batches from time to time and improved on the design as they went along.

I don't know enough about either camera to speak intelligently on whether or not a FED version existed...The seller, in both cases is calling them "copies" in the listing, which I understood to mean replica/fake. I just like the look of his FED version better, without all the polished chrome. Call me crazy, but it's almost more interesting to me to have an oddball camera that no one ever actually made...Like the fake FED1 standard (search for FED Standart on eBay) in black paint from another seller that never actually existed...if the fit and finish of that particular camera looked better (they polished everything, including the lens mount...yikes) I would consider it just for the novelty and the fact that it would still be a decent camera with a decent lens.

Of course I have no relation to either seller...I just think it's neat to see some novel Russian cameras there aren't covered in tacky gold plating and nazi symbols.

Yeah, that's more like it. But I could do without the brass accents. If they would just make a user version, instead of these obvious collector models, it could be a good seller.

Look at the other items for sale from the seller in the OP. He has a regular FED with all of the "Siberia" add ons. He is calling that one a FED SIBIRIA
