SN 293914 says Leica Ie 1938, but it has lugs, what is it?
The lens, in feet!, later, but I don't know when.

A factory coated Elmar that goes to F22 is quite late, just before the red scale versions. Can just see but can't read the serial number which is on the black ring that runs round the front element. The camera is indeed 1938. Sartorius says that a few thousand assembled in New York did have lugs.

(what you need is clean chrome FOKOS in feet...I am about to sell just such a thing(UK))

Thanks! Elmar #804450
Won't need the FOKOS, I have quite wide spaced eyeballs, so my distance guessing is pretty good, at least up to 100 ft.

Thanks!
It is in very nice condition, especially for something from 1938, but there is a lot to do to fix it up. It squeaks on winding on, and the shutter goes "buzz-zing" It is dry and springs are set too tight, I think. Anyway, I'm not going to do it, I'll send it out.

Hi,
Well worth getting fixed, like all cameras we like. I've one or two of them and find them ideal every now and then to remind myself what photography is/was all about before the machines and computers took over. I guess that makes me what some people would call a Luddite...
Regards, David

"Luddite" ?
I prefer to think of myself as a serious amateur hobbyist who does not need extraneous & modernist features like rangefinder, light-metering, or digital anything. I am above all that.

You might want to check with DAG to see if Don can supply the right shutter speed dial.

I may be wrong but I thought that once the smaller dial was introduced the I, II and III all had 20-1 marked even though the I and II had no slow speeds?
I have no means of checking this...but I'm sure someone can?

Thanks, but I think this one is already somewhat of a bitsa, so originality may be a futile effort. If the works can be renovated to work well and quietly, I will be pleased.

I like non-matching vintage cameras like this for actual use - they have less collector's value.

I wanted to report back that Youxin Ye did a CLA on this camera, and now it makes a satisfyingly quiet "tunk" at shutter release.
