This black paint version from, funny enough, Schouten, is a much better lens to my eye. But I guess beauty is in the eye of the beholder (as well as price willing to pay, lol)

Yes, of course, otherwise you can not see whether the world is distorted or that you see the distortion of the lens. However, if I think about it, it can also be the distortion of your brain or of your perception.

Can anyone suss out what makes this special? I'm aware of this dealer and their often specialized listings, I guess in the the vein of Schouten. Just curious about it really.

I have one the same “special” version lens, I would never list it at that price.

It can be a prototype. The Summilux 50mm was introduced in 1959, but the serial number of this lens is from 1958.
