Very early thoughts ... the price has already dropped from the rumored 3,000 to 1,850 for the body. A Nex 7 (what I see it similar to) sits around 1,000. If the sensor is similar to the 5n with regards to Leica glass and it has an OEM adapter available as well as what looks like a much improved EVF, then why not? I think it is a lot more camera and much better priced than the X Vario. There are lots of little interesting details beyond the unibody. The strap system looks interesting, for example. I see it, less the lens, as a better X series with a mount for M glass -at about the same price.
 
It sure does not look like every other (digital) camera out there, although the first look absolutely screams NEX or, gasp, Samsung. The design is much more thoroughly thought out, and the system looks quite stylish. The touchscreen interface seems to be the cleanest on the market based on the couple of short clips and pictures I have seen so far. If the implementation is smooth, it's probably very nice and usable.

I'm actually positively surprised. Of course, it doesn't mean I would be buying this camera. It lacks features I expect to get, and the system is very pricey for my meager budget.

I stand corrected - $1850 for the body only - I retract a few of my lulz.. not all the lulz.. but a few 😀 So that price may be a bit more "palatable" to the well heeled crowd - Doctors, Lawyers, Engineers, Plumbers... - but it's still a wee bit pricey (just my take mind you)

The aluminum body is a good thing.
Based on what I've read so far it looks as though the sensor is the same as the Vario X. I guess if you already had M-mount lenses, and IF the sensor can deal with said lenses (i.e. not smudge the wides in the corners etc.) then it may be worth looking at. I would assume that the mere fact that it's APS-C would mean your full frame M-Mount lenses would NOT smudge in the corners but hey, you never know with Leica.

So $3550 for a mirrorless cameras and a 3.5-5.6 zoom lens. Is this kit zoom the most expensive, slowest zoom lens in history? That to me is the comical bit. The body is nice with the construction and design, but a 3.5-5.6 zoom for $1700!! Wow.
 
It's fine. No more ridicules than driving a $40K entry level Mercedes which many seem quite content to do (even though $40k get's a person one hell of a Toyota!).
Leica is in the business of making money. If they make a few cameras and lenses along the way so be it 😛

This Camera/lens set should come as no surprise not because Leica is not capable of better but rather... the remainder of the industry is capable of doing better for less money than relatively small Leica can do!

Honestly, it looks like a fine camera to me. Expensive, yes. Typically Leica attention to the details they feel are important ... yes. For everyone, not a chance. But I have to say that I've never been disappointed by a Leica's performance, as long as what I wanted to use it for was what it was designed to do. I suspect this will be no different.

War journalists might be careless, but they aren't rich enough.
Also, good luck with holding it on freezing days of long slavic winters.


Leica HQ is very consistent with their digital non-RF lineup.
They build expensive cameras on exterior for status quo willing to overpay customers.

What else to carry on around your neck to show how rich you are?
Huge gold credit card on gold chain?

Aluminium is proven to be gold for some Russians.
 
The Leica T is very nice camera, Leica introduced a lower priced interchangeable system with M-compatibility. However from the comments I have read, the Leica T gets dissed from being uninnovative to prices too steep.

i am glad leica didn't do a hasselblad and introduce a rebadged camera or try to compete with the mass market electronics giant like nikon or samsung. Leica is a small company with a small budget. The best thing that they can do is to appeal to folks who are okay being non-mainstream while having some of the best lenses around and wrapping the whole concept as a back-to-basics shooting experience.

Yes, Leica is expensive, it has always been expensive since the first barnack was introduced. and why should it cheapen its brand by making a boring camera ?

I thought the camera looked good.. The Steve Huff review was of interest to me. He can be said to be a Leica fan boy, but he brought up stuff I did not get out of other reviews like the one from dpreview.

- Confirmed lenses are made in Japan and not by Panasonic.
- relatively small af lens - compared it w/ his 50 m mount
- 3x and 6x for manual focus assist
- no color or edge issues w/ his Leica m mount 21 or 50
- plenty of sample shots

For me, an interesting camera..could be the answer to the Ricoh gxr m module replacement but a tad bit more than I would like to pay since I need
- body
- evf
- special m mount adapter
Which pushes it closer to $3000 range w/o any af lenses. The dual wheel setup is kind of like the nex7. I am not sure I like so much touch screen control. Definitely staying on the side line on this since I have the gxr w/ m module..

Next to read Ming's review 🙂 ....

Anyone going to pre-order?
