Leica teases "Mini M"

Even when you call the digital M a mirrorless, I would not call Leica the leader in mirrorless market tech. Leica has fullframe because it needed to. But all the other "tech" in the digital M is not exciting at all.

Jup the viewfinder is nice, but wouldn't call it "innovative world leading mirrorless tech" :)

I do hope it will be an interesting camera, but parting from photography and focussing on the snobbery market I think it will be a let down. If it was something photographers could use, all those dream cameras mentioned in this topic, I don't think they would call it M mini and put it next to the M Micro and M Nano. 2 cameras which only special feature is that they are way more expensive than other cameras and have a more vintage look and good quality but not good enough.

And it's probably more interesting for Leica to release jewelry cameras as most legacy lens users will buy the full frame NEX or X.
Leica cares more about film stars etc so people want their cameras? They stopped caring about most M users when the M9 and Leica brand proved to be successful in other markets, mainly the luxury market.

Leica is the leader in the mirrorless market tech: no competition has come up with full frame alternative in M form factor.

They are indeed the leader in a tiny niche, namely, up-market interchangable lens rangefinder digitals.

However there is a full frame alternative that is actually smaller than M form factor.

This will be an interesting announcement although I don't think any other camera manufacturers really care what Leica does.

Which one?

My guess:
a. M8 with fixed 35mm cron
b. M8 with built-in electronic rangefinder
c. X2 with M mount
d. X2 with full frame sensor
e. M240 with APS-C CMOS sensor (i have a strong feeling about this one) ;)

due to their cooperation with panasonic (D-lux line, former digilux3/L1) i would believe it's a leica branded roumored GX-2 Panasonic, but then Leica said a while ago APS-C is the minimum sensor they would accept in pro/sumer market, so it could be a mirrorless X too.. or did they change mind after the latest sensor improvements in 43 size?

In secret, I'd still wish for a FULLFRAME mirrorless, whoever launches this first, SONY, Leica, Ricoh A24?... whoever, get's my money. yes I know the new M is a FF mirrorless, but I talking cameras that are actually 'available' ! ;-)

Aps H Leica Cl Digital

Aps H Leica Cl Digital

I would put my money on an APS H Lieca CL digital. Here, we have a Leica M8 like camera that has much better high ISO but not full frame, hence people will still buy the M240, but for many, APS H is good enough! My M8 has proved that to me except at higher ISO and a little more resolution similar to the X Pro-1.

my guesses, in order of what makes sense to me

1. FF mirrorless M-Mount NEX/XE crusher. reuses a lot of parts from the m240, and takes out a lot of cost. does a lot for lenses. would also be the right size.

2. slightly larger x2 with M mount. oh wait, that's what i just said. except with a smaller sensor.

3. APS-C with 35mm or 50mm fixed. trumped by the sony rx-1 and doesn't sell lenses.

I do not believe that leica will ever put a less than full frame sensor in an m mount body again. That is a passed station. There is so much good enough aps competition out there. I'm sure they would see that as a compromise of the m-mount concept. And why would they want to invest in developing a custom aps sensor, to match their lenses now they have just spent money developing a full frame one.

If they do use aps, it will be in a fixed lens body, so the lens can be made to suit an off the shelf sensor. Basically an X2 with a different lens, and perhaps a built in EVF, or some variation on that concept. I doubt they would introduce (yet another) a new mount, with new lenses etc.

Calling the X2 Micro M is a bit strange. My first guess was sensor size, so Mini M would have to be larger, however the more I think about it, the more I think they are referring to the physical size of the cameras. Ignoring what M stands for, which the picture pretty much does, we are looking at a camera between the size of the M and the X2.

I can't imagine Leica cannabilising. M240 sales, nor do I think an Evf only camera based exactly on the M240 would be a pleasant user experience. So would rule that one out.

My wish would be an M mount APS-H Evf, don't think it will be though. Maybe APS-C interchangeable based on X2. Not Auto-focus either way.

An X2 like camera with built in Evf might be a possibility. Maybe FF non-interchangeable. Don't think they would make a fixed lens camera with optical rangefinder. Maybe an optical viewfinder with no RF.

I am preparing to be underwhelmed though - maybe an X2 like camera with built in short zoom.

From what I have been reading, it may be a M240 without a rangefinder assembly and full time live view.
