Leica Z2X, any opinions?... and an intro.

Hello,

As this is my second post I guess I should make a quick introduction.

I started in photography back in the early 70's when my mother gave me her Kodak 35. I photographed my way through middle and high school and was all set to go to Brooks for college when a weird chain of events sent me on a path into the fire service. I have been a firefighter/paramedic for the last 29 years.

I stayed involved with photography for a time stringing for the Miami Herald, shooting for a fire service magazine, and working as the director of still photography for a TV show called Open House America. Working for that show burned me out to the point that I didn't pick-up a camera for 10 years.

So in the last few years, after playing with some digital P&S's, I started to rebuild a DLSR system. I also recently bought a Canon S90 after reading about it on this forum.

All of that lurking has got me interested in getting a film P&S to have some fun with and re-discover my roots.

Now that brings me back to the original topic of this post...

The Leica Z2X. Do any of you have this? Any opinions on it compared to some of the other P&S I have seen mention here?

I've had one in the collection and used it but never really got excited about it or the prints. I've other small cameras that performed far better, imo. For example the Olympus µ[mju]-III 80, Pentax ESPIO 928, Nikon 90S and so on.

I prefer the Leica C3 which turns out prints etc the way I'd expect a camera with that name on it to do it. And the little Leica mini is a good performer.

Sorry I can't say more; although I think it's a nicely design camera and really good looking. The trouble is, there's more to it than looks.

Just picked up a Olympus µ[mju]-III 80 for $1 on ebay. I'll start out playing with this... the more I read the worse it gets. Now looking at a GR1s and a Rollei 35 RF.

I've got the GR1v. The Ricoh's are very high performers and about the most pocketable 35mm ever made.

What's the difference between the GR1 and GR1v

The GR1v adds an illuminated LCD display. The GR1 has an LCD but it's not illuminated. The GR1v also allows manual ISO setting, auto bracketing, lens hood, and the ability to add filters. The only difference with the GR1s and the GR1v is the manual ISO setting which the GR1s doesn't have.

With a run of winners like that you'd best go looking for a Leica M6 or M7. But if you do get one for pennies, please, please, don't tell us the price.

I hope you like the others and they live up to their reputation.
