hello friends,

i just got a Leitz New York Wollensak Velostigmat 50mm/f3.5. can any of you LTM guys school me on it ? does it have any special characteristics or a "look" that would be worth exploring ? what are they worth in average, good, etc condition ? rarity ?

pardon my iphone macros.

Can't tell you a thing about that lens in particular. Wollensak put out some good lenses for their day, and I seem to recall the Velostigmats were a good line. Someone can surely comment on that at least.

thanks alot guys , and i will post photos taken with the Leitz/Wollensak as soon as it gets it's cla. Johan that is a great looking hack and yes please post some photos taken with it. thanks again for your time and responses :)

very nice.... i hope the Leitz/Wollensak has a similar look wide open. since i can't share any photos taken with my lens yet i'll have to just post a clearer photo of it :) i'll do this when i return to Berlin in 3 weeks. but in the meantime where are all the Wollensak photos ? i would really get a kick out of seeing more.

Shot with Leica M6 on Fomapan 200, Wollensak 50/2.8 wide open @ 1/30th

Reminds me of a Pre 1947 Summitar look........

Nice to meet you Lem this afternoon.

I posted a similar question about the Wollensak LTM 50 last October. Was curious about what it was, and the fact that my lens was engraved in metres instead of feet, as just about any lens made for use in America would be.

I believe the two photos attached were shot with the Wollensak 50/3,5 shown above:

Jay,

my Perfex Wollensak 50/3.5 has a very similar coating, but I reckon the optical construction is different, the lens on the Perfex is very small and compact.

The larger optical layout would possibly provide room for a better aperture mehcanism? I busted my first Perfex one when setting aperture because the blades stuck with oil... Current one is better, but would love to have one fixed into a Leitz mount & focusing helical... The Perfex aperture mechanism has very feeble studs that the aperture blades pivot on.

Anyone got a Wollensak LTM for peanuts for me? :wink::nudge::nudge:

Johan,

If the Perfex-Wollensak is of the same Tessar design, the opitcal construction could be the same. It may even be possible to find the same optical blocks enclosed within the barrels of both lenses.

The optical block of the LTM Wollensak isn't big at all. It only looks so because of the Elmar style metal fascia, the black ID ring around the lens, and the chrome barrel itself. There's a lot of space inside that barrel. As far as I can remember, the aperture linkage is composed of just a few metal parts and yes, what could be 'feeble studs' too.

You will have to pay with a lot of peanuts (yes lots and lots and lots!!!) to get one of these Wollensaks. :) They don't seem to be common. Two have already surfaced in Manila. Strange. :p

This is how the lens in the original post looks now:

Two Wollensak Velostigmat LTM 50, with metric scales, surfacing here in Manila... they mustn't be that rare! :D
