lens cap for an elmar...

I'm really scared by the eventuality of having the curtains of my camera burning like ants unders an enlarging lens, so I wanted to find an elmar 50/3.5 cap.

but it seems impossible! what could I use instead of the original one?

Here. Maybe a bit pricy, though or cameraquest.com has A36 plastic caps for a little less.

I used to pick up caps which were gathering dust in the junk bin of a camera shop.

Shutters don't burn all that easily. Only the really stupid can do it.

I have some milk caps left, work great on various lenses. Is your Elmar an E39 lens? I will check the fit on my Summicron.

E39 refers to the filter thread diameter. All 50/3.5 Elmars are E36, meaning the threads are 36mm across, as opposed to the E39 being (you guessed it) 39mm in diameter.

The milk caps I still have around fit 39mm filters. If you stretch them just a little (flexible plastics) it will also fit the front of my Summicron. Your M-Elmar is of the same vintage so the plastic caps will fit.
I also have some Leica caps around (metal for not using and thus not losing) and black plastic ones. These fit the lens front. They are deep enough to reach over the filter. I can send you some milk caps for postage. Most of them are blue.

FSU caps for elmar clones work ok if you can ignore the zorki or fed nomenclature on the front. You can get the complete camera and case for less than an origonal cap and it may take as good photos...
